Whnra Ara We Going? • ' • ■■ ‘lt takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” This was the advice from the Queen to Alice in the humorous satire, “Alice in Wonderland.” And it’s very good advice. Many people think that Decatur cap “stand still” or resist progress and change. It cannot. The city win change, just as the people in it grow up, mature, get jobs, have families, become grandparents, grow old, and finally die. Many people think that a “no* change” Decatur would be a good place to live. But would it, even if it were possible? ■—--j—- — — Parents want their children to find jobs in this city, or at least nearby. But unless the city grows, expanding local opporunity, the children will have to look elsewhere for their employment. How many young people, talented, educated, and badly needed in Decatur, have left us to search for “greener pastures” and better jobs? Decatur can make the jobs available locally. It can be done by a serious program of building in Decatur the attributes that growing companies desire in a factory location. » It can be done by building in the minds of local people the desire and interest in growing, becoming better, and improving. But just “keeping up” with the other Jonesburgs around this area is not progress. It is, as the Queen told Alice, necessary to run at least twice as fast. The Decatur Chamber of Commerce is meeting July 18 to discuss some things which may help bring about needed changes in Decatur. Members are urged to attend and give their views. Talk has also circulated about forming a Junior Chamber of Commerce in Decatur. Decatur is the largest city in the state which does not have a group of active Jaycfees. The city council and mayor are anxiously discussing the uses to be made of the bullion obtained from the sale of the local power plant to I&M. This money can be used in such away that it encourages growth and development in Decatur, or it can be used to discourage it. Many other nearby cities are moving forward, too. Winchester has just made a 10-cent levy to build new storm sewers in that city. Portland can completed a new city pool, as has Columbia City. t A new city garage will be constructed at Hartford City * So, Decatur must move forward twice as fast as its * neighbors to gain on them—all the cities in the area : are progressing, and our local pride will certainly see 'that we advance in the next decade as much as we have fin the past ten years. |— — . 4
