'Coot» Binkley. 75, Montpelier, a retired glassblower who recently won a legal battle in hi« claim to half of a multi-milhon dollar ortune. died in General Hospital today. Binkley was' hospitalized June 18. Doctors said he died of cancer complicated by bronchial pneumonia. , Only last month. Binkley was not'tied that his claim to half of ft 33,126,488 estate had been upheld by the Fourth District Court of Appeals in California. Binkley moved here from Montpelier last Spring. He resided with Mr. and Mrs Albert Strpud until he was hespitalized. His body was taken to a funeral home at Hartford City. Binkley originally was awarded half of the estate of his late halfsister. Mrs. Cora Nidever. by a court in Fresno,* Calif., in 1958. A group of Mrs. Nidever's relatives appealed the decision to the district court and lost. , ‘‘l don't believe in spending nwney I haven’t got, ; , Binkies was once quoted as saying. Those who knew him well said he cared more, for horses than for money, ajjyway. Mrs. Nidever died in 1955 and left no will. Binkley’s claim to the estate was based on penftion files which showed he was the son of a Civil War veteran who remarried I after divorcing Mrs. Nidever's mother. . However. Binkley had said ortep he was perfectly content to spend his days grooming two horses for the harness-racing season which opens this week. —He died without seeing a penny of the rich estate.
