When children grow up into rrapoiiaible adulU, who benefit*? 4 We can answer that, perhaps first, the parents and family—they can take pride in the accomplishments of their children, and rely with confidence on their judgement and help in their declining years. But even mor¥ than the immediate family, the entire community is benefitted. Ke*ponKible adult citizens is the great asset that a community can potwess. Leadership results from the development of the raw material of responsibility. And leadership, with cooperation by the other adults of the community, results in growth or progress. No community stands still. Individuals can stagnate, and wish for the good old days, which they remember. but which never return. But a city or town either grows or dies. Today, Decatur enjoys away of life that even metropolitan New York did not dream of a century’ ago. Only by concerted effort of all the inhabitants of a community? like the Amish, as an example, can the past be frozen irfto the present and the future. And there is perhaps some question as to whether they have been completely successful in maintaining the strict okl ways of the forefathers. It is best to follow leaders who face the future with confidence, rather than hover in the rear, waiting for progress to*be pushed upon us as the byproduct of the industry of others, or of other communities. The future of Decatur will be what we make of it—a glorious one, or a fading rose in the garden of life.
