A few years ago, police chief James Borders had a very effective organization called the Junior Police. Boys 13 years old. and younger, met once a week, sometimes more often for special projects, and did many interesting things, above all learning how to get along with others, and be useful members of society. They enjoyed greatly the program of outdoor police life, which was aimed at helping those who did not particularly find a place in more organized groups. However, only one or two volunteers ever hel|>ed with the program, and lack of time for supervision, plus lack of finances, made it necessary to drop the project. If any adults, or groups of adults are interested in starting the project again, there are many young children who would be very greatly interested in it. And chief Borders can be counted on to give the full cooperation of the Decatur police force. Another thing urgently needed in Decatur is a “drag strip,” located and constructed for safety, and properly supervised and protected. Any number of young people, interested in nothing except autos or motorcycles, would use the strip, and could no longer be excused for “dragging” on city streets and county roads. It would take some careful planning and long-range work to bring about a drag strip, but the young people of the community would appreciate it more than any other single thing needed here. Let’s keep Decatur up with the times, and keep the youngsters interested in the growing community problems which we face by adequately meeting the challenge of the “drag strip” age!
