(Editor’* Note> Do you have any, question* about Social Security? ; We all do. don t w«? Send anyj question you might have to Social ! Security Quia, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in thi* column, which is published regularly.) 1. Q-My social security card . ha* my name spelled with jvo ••eV. and my employer’* record* | show it with only one. Does this matter? If it does, what should I do about it? A—That depends on which | spelling is correct. If your employer’s record is correct, then visit your nearest social security office and 'ask for a form to correct your social security rec-| ord. They will issue you a new | card with your name spelled correctly. If your social security record is correct, then you should: have ydur employer correct his, records. Z Q—l am receiving my old-age; retirement payments. I understand, that if I want to get all my bene- ( fits, I must limit my earnings to , $1,200 in a calendar year. I now > ( earn this amount in wages. If I work a little as a self-employed person and do not het S4OO a year, • will the amount I earn from self-
employmeht. say about $350, count toward the $1,200? A—Yes. it w4H. In any year that you are under 72. all earnings, whether or not covered by social security, will count in the amount you are allowed to earn while receiving ’benefits. If you have earnings from wages or self-em-ployment, regardless of the amount, you must count them all in figuring your annual earnings after you retire. 3. Q—l retired in 1952 and started to receive benefits. I have received two increases when the law was changed. After I retired, I never Went back to work. If I go down to the social security office now. could they increase my benefit? A—No, they could not. If you haven’t worked* since you retired, there could be no increase in your benefit. 4. Q—l am under age 72 and eligible for social security benefits. How can I get social security checks for some months even though I earn over $1,200 a year? A—ls you earn more than $1,200 a year, two things determine the number of checks you can receive for the year. For every SBO or part of SBO you earn over the $1,200, one month’s benefit .will be withheld. For example, if you earn $1,201.01, one month's check is withheld; if you earn 51,280.01, two month's checks; and if you earn $2,080.01, all 12 month’s checks ard withheld. On the other hand no matter how much you earn in the year, you can receive your monthly payment for any month in which you neither earn wages of more than SIOO nor render services in self-employment. This means that even though you DON'T TAKE A CHANCE TAKE PLENAMINS Smith Drug Co.
earn over o.o* in the year, you may still get benefit* for «»me month*. 5. Q—l am receiving social *e- ■ curity disability payment*. May 11 earn as much as $1,200 a year I ■ before any of my monthly checks I arc withheld? A—Since you are getting serial security payments because-of a disability, the earnings rules I which apply to other beneficiaries | do not apply to you. As soon as' ■ you go to work, you must notify 1 your social security office at once.
