Home Air Conditioning for All Predicted in Decade Ahead
The 1960’s promise to be the decade wncn home air conditioning will become standard equipment in nearly every climate zone in the country. This is a prediction agreed upon by home-minded leadera in government, industry, science, and medicine, as well as by builders and home owners who now enjoy air-conditioned houses. What has caused these men to believe that before the end of the ’6O s nearly every American family will come to accept central air conditioning as they now do bathrooms and electricity? A Here are a few facts: » 1 The Air Conditionint and
Refrigeration Institute estimates that more than >OO.OOO homes were air conditioned in 1959. This is more than double the home installations in 1954. 2. Surveys by House & Garden magazine snow that air-con-ditioning equipment prices are about two-thiras lower than they were in 1947. 3. The costs ot equipment are lowered even more oy engineering advances in the installation of insulation. Exhaustive studies have shown, for example, that mineral wool installed in proper quantities actually can reduce the size—and consequently the cost—of equipment by as much as 50 per cent 4. Operating costs have been engineered downward so that average income families can afford them easily. This is be-
FHA OKAYS COOLING The Federal Housing Administration has announced that central air conditioning systems in a "home now are eligible under an FHA-approved mortgages.

cause property installed mineral wool reduces heat gain ao markedly that smaller equipment requiring less electricity can do an efficient cooling job. 5. Homes are better built today, and can be sited and designed to shrug off much of a summer day’s heat For example, wide overhangs "Shade walls and windows, while a roof of white or light-cdlor asphalt shingles reflects much of the sun’s heat 6. The federal government has recognized the advantages of air conditioning. 7. Home owners themselves, and families planning to build or buy houses soon will demand air conditioning, not for comfort alone but for better mental and physical health and general home cleanliness. _
Blow-in Wool Helps Cool Older House "Part of the myth and mysterj that confuses many people about air conditioning is insulation. Some owners of old houses think that much as they’d like it, ait 'Conditioning is beyond reach because their houses can’t be ihsulated properly. e , Not so, say air conditioning engineers. Insulating an existing house of any age .and any construction has been simplified by materials, tools and' technique! developed especially for the job. Granulated mineral wool, called ‘blowing wool,” is blown into spaces between ceiling and floor joists and wall studs through pneumatic hoses. The mechanic removes a brick, shingle or section clapboard front, the aider wall, drills a hole in the sheathing. inserts the nozzle and forces the mineral wool tightly into every crevice with air pressure, The siding is then carefully replaced. Attic floors and ceilings are done by bringing the hose through a window. This ‘‘blowing wool” technique has been successfully used in millions of houses, including many row houses attached, on both sides. The insulation pays for itself, often within a couple of years, because it drastically reduces heating bills. If your budget requires doing the job in stages, insulating now will immediately result in a cooler house in summer, a warmer house in winter, and lower fuel bills.. It will make your wait for air conditioning more comfortable. Home owners who plan to move within a few years will find that air conditioning and insulation will add to their home s resale value-
