For A Growing Community Whan the Dvcatur electric utility become* an integral part.of the Indiana-Michigan ayatam, it wiU be a part of the largeet In vent or-owned electric aystem in the world. Decatur's peak electric load, during the winter when factories, home*, and businesses are all running at top speed with electric gadgets by the hundreds, is 9,350 kilowatts. This sounds very high. Yet it is not. It is slightly below the national and regional average for electric use. The main reason for that ik, use of electrically-operated motors has never been systematically pushed, or advertised, in the Decatur area. l&M's peak load is 1,088,000 kite*alts, 116 times Decatur's. And l&M represents about onefifth, or 20%, of the American Electric Power system, the parent company. The parent company ties together the Eastern and Midwestern United State* in a huge power network, with a capability of producing 5,558.000 kilowatts. The system has a peak load of 4,730,000. Decatur will be tied to a system that encompasses 4 1/3% of the investor-owned power-producing capacity in the United States. Central Soya, the largest soybean user in America, represents about 1% of that industry. "This means that Decatur's potential is virtually unlimited now by power needs. Both I&M and the parent company plan to increase power-producing capabilities by 200% in 10 years, 400% in 20 years. Industries, as well as householders, farmers, and businessmen, will gain by this. Electric power represents one of the basic needs of a modern community. Water, gas, oil, communications, including rail, highway, and air, are other necessities. ■ — •** Water is still a major problem in Decatur. Deepwater wells, running hundreds of feet into the bedrock under the city, must be used rather than the cheaper, more productive, and shallower gravel-water supplies Available in other areas. The last city administration had numerous tests made to see if-ground-water from gravel sources was available in this area, but none was located. Several possibilities of small reservoirs on stream tributaries to the St. Marys have been suggested, as well as damming the St. Marys itself. Decatur has excellent rail facilities for a small community, being represented by three railroads. Highways are just fair. While three state highways pass through Decatur, they are narrow and antequated by modern super-highway standards. Ten years of hard work by community leaders could very well see Decatur move from its present fifth class status into the fourth class size, which includes cities from 10,000 to 20,000 in population.
