Welsh for governor were reported thia weekend to bo maturing. The mam objective of the "coup d'etat" was hatched in the state office of appellate court judge John S. Gonas. according to reports. A coalition of John Wab>h, Nelaon (in lia, and Albert Steinwedel force*, according to the reported plan, will put up a team of dark homer if the going looka too rough for them just before the convention deadline. Reger Branigan and Paul Butler are the dark bomae mentioned. The idea in, whoever doe* not get nominated for governor in 1960 will be matured the nomination for senator in 1962. With either Branigan or Butler as the Democratic nominee for governor, the rest of the ticket would look like this: % Lieutenant-Governor — Steinwedel. Supreme court judge — Walsh. Attorney-General — Grills. Major Ralph Tucker was believed in on the plot, also. He is to become chairman of the Indiana toll road commissidn if the ticket wins. Many of the other longrange details have not yet leaked out. For one thing, William G. Moss, of Bloomington, who is a candidate for secretary of state, and reported to be among the plotters, apparently did not get a definite assignment in the reported plan. Moss has been an ardent supporter of Walsh for governor, and hoped to be nominated with him on the ticket. Many okl-line party workers, with no particular axe to grind, hearing of the planned coup, were of the opinion that neither Walsh nor Steinwedel would agree to this until too late. Both have already paid a $2,500 declaration fee to the Democratic state committee to run for governor. Most of Adams county’s delegation is believed to support Walsh and Steinwedel, but whether would stick by a Butler or Branigan ticket would depend on the county central committee’s ideas. The Adams county group opposes generally the rest of the fourth district, which supports Matt Welsh. | Earlier in the campaign an anonymous letter purs porting to show a similar arrangement of Welsh support--7 ers was mailed to various county chairmen and officials. Only the convention itself will tell the actual story, but undoubtedly many of the reported coalitions now existing can be traced back to previous convention promises and broken promises.
