Rockefeller Nol To Take Second Place NEW YORK <UPD—Vice President Richard M. Nixon indicated Wednesday he thought New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller should have a place on the national Republican ticket. Rockefeller’s first reaction: "Did he say what place?” Nixon, discussing politics as he toured the United States World Trade Fair here, said he would not declare his choice for the GOP vice presidential nomination before he is formally nominated for president. But be said “Republican leaders across the nation have told me that Governor Rockefeller has a strong pull on the voters and that he would add strength to the tfolret? •’€ert»mly> he has all the qualities of national leadership." Earlier this week stories out of Washington reported “sources close to the vice president" as saying Nixon wanted Rockefeller as his running mate. It was widely interpreted as an offer to Rockefeller of the No. 2 place on the ticket. In Albany, N.Y., Rockefeller tempered his “what place" quip by stating categorically that “I will net be a candidate for vice president under any circumstances, no matter who might ask.” Rockefeller was asked why if he were standing by his withdrawal from the presidential race, he still refused to endorse Nixon. ‘T am not and will not be a candidate for president,” he replied. "and I will not endorse any candidate prior to the convention,"
