Down Payments On Homes Are Reduced WASHINGTON • UPI •— Federal Housirfe Commissioner Julian H Zimmerman today reduced minimum down payments on houses bought with government - insured mortgages 5 The reductions will apply only on homes costing more than 313,500 The biggest cutback would be $525. on dwellmgs costing SIB,OOO or more. Congress gave Zimmerman authority last year to cut the down payments but he refused until now on grounds that loan money was too hard to get anyway He tobd a news conference the loan situation did not begin to ease until two months ago. Under the new schedule. 3 per cent cash will still be requirt'd on the first $13,500 of house price The middle bracket will be extended from $16,000 to SIB,OOO and the rate lowered from 15 to 10 per cent On the portion of price above SIB,OOO, a rate of 30 per cent down wil be required — the amount which has appied above $16,000. Down payment requirements of the Federal Housing Administration, which insures home mortgages. apply both to newly constructed and existing houses. Zimmerman said a special survey April 15 indicated that more money was becoming available for mortgages and there were some indications that construction costs were coming down slightly. He said he expected the situation to improve over the next couple of months, with a resulting spurt in home construction.
