One of the best methods for cleaning light felt hats Is to rub the soiled spots, or the entire hat. with a cube of French chalk, which may be purchased at any drug store. Allow this to remain on the hat for a few hours, or over night, and then brush off with a soft brush. Average Minister In U.S. Underpaid By !A>nß CABBEUJ I'nited Frees InternaUenal It should not be news to anyone toat preachers are underpaid. But some church members may be surprised — even shocked—to learn just how poorly the average minister is reimbursed for his 80 to 80 hour work week. Some enlightening figures are at hate from a survey conducted recently by The Methodist Church, toe nation's largest Protestant body. Questionnaires were sent to 900 Methodist ministers selected on a "sampling” basis to represent ell parts of toe country and all types ate sizes of focal churches. Average Salary 85.288 The average cash salary of the ministers covered by the survey is 85,288. By clergy standards, this is high Other surveys covering many denominations have indicated that the average salary for all U.S. Protestant pastors is around $4,500. So the first thing to bear in mind about this survey fe toat it deals with a group of ministers who are a little bit better off than most of their colleagues. Even so, the questionnaires tell a bleak story. Three-Fourths in Debt Three-four ths of toe Methodist parsons said they are currently in debt. In each ease, some financial crisis — big medical bills, a child entertag college, or something of toat sort — has putoed the precariously-balanced family
budget into the red. The average indebtedness is 81.871, which is enough for even a man of faith to worry about. What about all score ”fringe benefits” that ministers arc supposed to get’ Four out of five said they have the privilege of living rent-free in a parsonage But many reported toat their parsonages are the kind of homes that no temily would choose if it had a choice ta the matter — large, old-tash-foned structures with no modern conveniences ate very high utility bills. Utility Bills Important The utility bills are important, be cause in most cases toe minister has to pay them out of tas own pocket Only one in five gets an allowance for this purpose. Sixty per cent get an "automobile allowance.” But the neires showed that this allowance typically covers leas than half of the actual expenses which a minister incurs in driving an average of 1,080 mites a month on parish calls and otter church business. In the light of these figures, it seems truly remarkable that not one of toe ministers to the survey plans to #ve up Ms vocation in order to seek a Bvtag wage in an easier job. AU said they came into the ministry because they felt God ,bte called them to that service, ate they intend to stick K out regardtern of the sacrifices involved for themselves ate their families. This finding should be comforttag to laymen. U means toat churches can safely go on- exploiting the men of God who occupy their pulpits. I Modern Etiquette I By ROBERTA LEE o. - — Q.
