A—lt is not necessary, but it is always advisable to notify the post office of any change in your address. 3. Q —l have been receiving social security payments for my minor son who will be 18 years of age this coming October. Since

Actually your son’s last payment will be for September 1960 because bene fiU end with the month before the month of attaining 18. 4 Q—My husband and I have been drawing benefits at the minimum rate. Now he has died Will my widow's benefit be only three-fourths of his $33 monthly rate? A—No. You will receive $33 a month. Although a widow s benefit is usually three-fourths of her susband's monthly rate, a widow alone will not be paid less than $33. 5. Q—My wife and I have been receiving our social security payments in a cambined check. However. now that she is in a nursing home, is it possible for us to get separate checks—one sent to me and one sent to my wife at the nursing home? A—Yes. Separate checks can be issued when a couple are separated. Separate checks will be issued when you request it. and in all cases where it is burdensome or difficult for the payees to promptly negotiate their checks. 6. Q—l have been unemployed for almost 2 years, yet I am only 63 years of age. Some friends have told me I should freeze my social security record, telling me that I will lose out on the amount of my payments if I do not. A— Softy. You cannot freeze your earnings record because you are unemployed. Social security earnings can be frozen only when the worker is totally disabled. However, we always drop up to five years of little or no earnings--Jwhcn~benefitS’~ are figured. In your case, this drop-out covers the years of unemployment. If, therefore, you had steady work under social security from 1950 on up to the time you reached age 60. the years since then will not be counted against you. 7. Q—l am receiving old age retirement payments. My w wife is 49. We are considering the adoption of our granddaughter, age 11. If we adopt her. how will my benefits be affected, and when? A—ls you and your wife adopt this child, both your wife and the child will become immediately
