(Editor’s Note) Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published regularly.) 1. Q I heard It takes 6 months to get social security payments. The only income I’ll have when 1 retire is a small pension from my company. Any way to speed up the social security? A. Most claims are processed in about 8 weeks. You can insure prompt handling of your claim by having all the documents needed on your first trip to your social security office. These are: your social security card, some evidence of your age and evidence of your last year's earnings, such as your W 2. If you are a married man and your wife is also applying, she should bring evidence of age and her social security card if she has one. 2. Q. I have heard various individuals talk about the optional method for reporting farm income. Can you explain this optional method in a sentence or two? A. A self-employed farmer whose grass income is from S6OO to SIBOO for a year may report for social security purposes two-thirds of his gross income. If his gross profit is over SIBOO and his actual net profit is less than SI2OO, he may still report the actual net profit or SI2OO. If his gross profit is over SIBOO and his net profit is over SI2OO, then he must report the actual net profit as the option is not applicable. 3. Q. 1 see by the papers that the social security tax rate has gone up. Does that mean I get more when I retire? A. Beginning in 1959, Congress increased social security payments. The increase applies to survivors and disability benefits as well as to retirement benefits. To pay for the increase, congress provided for an increase in the social security tax beginning January 1, 1959 and again January 1, 1960. Future tax increases are scheduled to take effect in 1963, 1966, and 1969 to make certain that it will continue to be possible to pay these higher benefits without jeopardizing the financial stability of the program. 4. Q. My son died several years ago leaving a widow and two minor children. I was living with them and he was my sole support. I was told at that time that I could not receive any payments because of the widow and minor children. I learned recently that the social security law was changed and I am wondering if I could get payments now? I am 67 years old and badly in need of funds. A. The 1958 Amendments made it possible to pay monthly benefits to dependent parents even though there was a widow or minor children surviving. You should visit your local social security office and bring with you your birth certificate or some other proof of your age. Also bring with you in-
formation as to how much your son contributed to your support during the year prior to his death 5. Q." Someone told me that if my earnings aren’t reported to my social security office every year, I'll never be able to get benefit payments. I don’t understand this. I know a man who reported for just a few years and he's now getting retirement payments. A. It depends upon the worker's age. example, if be reached retirement age before July 1, 1954. he needed only I*4 years of covered work to become entitled to old-age benefits. Most people now reaching retirement age need to have credit for at least to 5 years of earnings on their social security account. A man born in 1906 or later, or a woman born in 1909 or- later will need to have credit for 10 years of covered work.
