Two hundred members from all over the state enjoyed a noon h “ fh ?’ n J“C invocation was given by the Rev. Armin Oldson of Concordia College. „ . Rev. Oldson also gave the Keynote address of the meeting, using the letters TOPS, which stand for take off pounds sensibly, as his topic. He interpreted the letters as T—take a count. O—organize. p_pcrscrverance. and S—success to all dieters, and said that a good I sense of humor is a necessity when dieting A Fort Wayne woman was crowned state queen, having lost 75 pounds during the past year. Success stories were related by first-place winners and a plaque was awarded to the club with the best average weight loss for the year. Elkhart was chosen as the site y for the 1961 recognition day. Door prizes and gifts were awarded. Those attending from Decatur were Mrs. Mildred Smith. Annette Scheiner. Vivian McCammon, Cara E. Hitchcock. Leona Baker. Bea Gray. Jerry Sprunger. Phyllis Felton, and Mercele HiU. The next meeting of the Decatur group will be held Tuesday at the home of Fern Frey. Each member is requested to bring a white elephant to the meeting. HI ■ WRS CONNIE BERGMAN ELECTED TO FHA DISTRICT OFFICE Cowan high school was the site of the Fecent spring district meeting of the Future Homemakers of America, where a junior at the Monmouth school. Miss Connie Bergman, daughter of Mrs. Floyd Strouse, was elected to the office of historian of the northeast district. When presented to the voting delegates and others attending. Miss Bergman was interviewed by the district president. She was required to make an impromptu speech answering the question, “If elected to this office, how do you think you will benefit from it?” Miss Bergman was installed into office in an impressive canddlelight ceremony. After the regular meeting, she remained for an executive council meeting. Miss Bergman will attend the officers’ workshop to plan the program for 1960-61. which will be held on the Ball State campus the last week in July. The day’s meeting included a variety of items on the program. The district voted to continue sponsoring three foreign children, one each from Korea, Munich, and West Germany. The speaker for the afternoon was Sherrel Fox, from Anderson College, who took the group around the world in 40 days with a talk and slides. Adams county Federation of Women’s clubs will conduct a meeting at 1:30 p. m. Friday at the C. L. of C. haU. Mrs. Walter Haynes, eighth district president of Anderson, win be in attendance. Records of clubs win be given. Mrs. Adrian Baker will be hostess for the Past Matrons of Eastern Star at 7:30 p. m. Thursday.

Arnold has been employed in the post office at Punta Gorda, Fla., since September 19. Miss Frances Dugan will return to Decatur today after a twomonths trip to Florida, Philadelphia, and Boston. Traffic was backed up to 12th street at most points at Adams, Jefferson. Monroe, and Nuttman. City police attempted to call the depot after receiving a-call complaining about the stalled traffic. No one answered at the depot. City police requested the complainants to file a formal complaint, but none would.

Yellin, 33. who was suspended from the University of Illinois several weeks ago because of a contempt of Congress conviction after he appeared at Indiana > hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, was 1 reinstated in the university Saturday. Yellin. a graduate engineering student, is appealing his convic- | tion by a U.S. District Court at : Hammond. Ind. He was sentenced to a year in prison and fined $350. The reinstatement was announced by Dean Frederick T Wall of the graduate college. Wall said a faculty subcommittee “subjected Mr. Yellin to three hours of searching verbal inquiry and that !he responded to their inquiries I with willingness, candor and ap- ' parent truthfulness.” Yellin was convicted for failure to answer questions by the House i committee during hearings on alleged Communisf>activities in the Hammond-Gary area. Six Persons Killed By Fires In State United Peeta International Six persons were killed in three home fire* In Indiana during the weekend. Three persons died when flame* swept a home-made house trailer at Jeffersonvile. John Kellis. 68. was dead when firemen quelled the flames. His sister. Miss Helen Kellis. 45. and a third occupant. Herbert Moran, died late Sunday in Clark County Hospital. Firemen said the Kellis home was a wood-and-siding trailer built on a truck frame. It apparently was ignited gy a defective wood stove. When firemen reached the scene and opened the door, the trailer exploded. In Indianapolis, Alys Hindman, 47. died Sunday night in a fire at her home. Firemen said it appcaked that she fell asleep while smoking. The fire was confined to the bedrdhm Her body was found between a bed and a window, as if she were trying to escape. A father and his son died in a fire at their West Terre Haute home early Saturday. Victims were James Marshall. 55, and his 15-year-old son, Clifford. Tree Jogs Broadway NEW YORK (UPD - It was a cherry tree that put the jog in world famed Broadway. Researchers of the Davey Tree Expert Co., Kent, Ohio, say that city officials curved the street around the tree when its tavern keeper owner objected to cutting it down. Officials believed the city would never ertend that far north anyway. The tree stood at 10th St.
