Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries
(Editor's Note) Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do. don't we? Send any I question you might have to Social Security Quix, c/o Daily Democrat You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published regularly.) 1. Q— What do you mean—work requirements — and why couldn’t he meet them before October. 1959’ A—When the disability provis- , ions were made a part of the social security law. Congress decided that there should be some way of measuring the contributions to the program of those who claimed benefits based on disability. They decided in order to be eligible for disability benefits, an individual must have been covered by the law at least five years out of the 10 years before he became disabled. This is what we mean when we say work requirements. I think I have answered your second question also. Since self-em-ployed farmers were not covered by social security until 1955. they cannot possibly have five years of work based on their farming ) until they have worked into the last quarter of 1959 2. Q—l am a widow receiving social security payments for myself and my son, age 8. I am planning to remarry. I understand that my benefits will be slopped but will my son continue to be paid? A—Your son's benefit will continue to be paid. Your benefit will terminate with the month before the month of remarriage unless your marriage is to a person who is also drawing social security benefits. Notify your social security office immediately upon remarriage. 3 Q— — I own and operate a farm. Are my social security l i i-.,j i ,niv in 1—- - A—People who work for themselves will pay a social security tax of 4fa per cent on the first S4BOO of their net earnings in 1960. This is an increase of % of 1 per cent over the 1959 rate. Note, however that you will not pay the 4fa per cent tax or! your -i960 earnings until early in 1961. The tax return you will be filing soon will cover your net earnings in 1959 and you will pay a tax of 3% per cent on the first S4BOO of those 1959 net earnings. 4. Q— My mother was receiving social security as a widow. -At her death, we returned the check for the month of her death. Recently I was told that if we presented the paid bill for her burial
| expenses, there would be a payment for a portion of the bill. Is I this true? A—There is no death benefit paid for a widow who was drawing only on her deceased husband's account. The lump sum is payable only upon the death of an insured wage earner. 5. Q—l receive a salary of SIOO a month for cooking. cleaning. washing, and ironing in a large household. In addition. I am provided room and meals by my employer. The value ot room and meals is substantial. I thought that value should be added to the cash wages for social security purposes. My employer, who reports S3OO a quarter for me. disputes this theory. Which of us is right? 9 A—Your employer is right. Only cash wages are counted in determining the amount of wages to be reported for social security purposes. 6. Q— l have been drawing social security for almost a year.* Now I have an opportunity to return to work for more than SI2OO per year. If I take the job and stop my benefits, will it be very difficult to get benefits reinstated when I stop work again? A—The benefits will be rein-' stated as soon as possible after you notify your social security office that you are again eligible. You should also check to see if the additional earnings would be enough at that time to have your benefit refigured for an increase in the amount. Car Is Demolished In Wreck Thursday A Berne teenager lost control of her car and totally wrecked the vehicle about a quarter-mile south of Coppess Corners onTU.S. 27, the Adams county sheriff’s department reported today. Alice Nussbaum, 17, of Berne, received a laceration on the right ear, and multiple bruises, when her car skidded on an icy patch of the road on a curve. The vehicle lurched through a fence on the Chris Inniger property. Miss Nussbaum was treated at the Adams county memorial hospital. The accident occurred at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Scratched Furniture An old, but still good, aid in remedying scratches on furniture is to dip a walnut meat into salt and rub this on the scratches. The oil of the walnut will color the scratches so that they will fade into oblivion. 4
