GREETINGS from the Daily Democrat to player*, •oar he*. school official* and fans an we near the 1960 sectional tourney. —-000— THE TOURNEY open* Wednesday night nt the Adam* Central gym. the aixth year in a row at the school at Monroe. ONLY THREE of Adam* county’s teams finished the lately closed season on the plus side with victories, Berne, Adam* Central and Geneva. The other teams have at times shown flashes of good basketball, but too rarely fur the iieace of mind of their coaches and funs. —oOo— THE DECATUR YELLOW JACKETS are the defending sectional champions, defeating the Hartford Gorillas in the final 1959 game. To refresh fans memories. here are the results from the 1959 sectional. Hartford 56, Berne 37. Geneva 47, I’leaaant Mills 36. Decatur Yellow Jackets 61. Adams Central 41. Decatur Commodores 65, Monmouth 38. Hartford 66, Geneva 43. Yellow Jackets 72. Commodores 61. Yellow Jackets 50, Hartford 34 (final). FROM TALK on the street and in the schools and gyms, the Berne Bears appear to be the outstanding favorites to win this year's crown. The Bears have defeated every other team in the county in addition to winning the county tourney, and their only loss to a county rival was a one-point setback at the hands of the Geneva Cordinals, a defeat they avenged in the final game of the county tourney. —oOo— ~ SINCE THE SECTIONAL became a strictly Adams county affair in 1940, Basketbawf has attempted to pick the winner of each game. Our crystal ball has been pretty lousv much of the time. In those years the writer has picked everv winner only twice, although selecting the sectional champ on several occasions. Here s the 1960 guess: COMMODORES-HARTFORD— These teams met at Hartford the week before the county tourney, with the Gorillas scoring a 53-44 win. A neutral court and some improved play on the part of the Commodores, however, lead to a vote for the COMMODORES. GENEVA-ADAMS‘CENTRAL— The Greyhounds won the regular season clash, but‘the Cardinals ousted the Greyhounds in the county meet. But Geneva is without Doyle Long, its topscorer until sidelined by injuries, so here’s a vote for the HOUNDS. PLEASANT MILLS-YELLOW JACKETS—Did not meet during the season and both have poor season records. However, with the Jackets playing a much stiffer schedule, it’s a vote for the YELLOW JACKETS. __ Continued on Page Five-A
