Is Education Important? tn how many way* ia education important to our chUdrrn ? First, naitotu* which are high in educational d«v«l---op me nt are high in pcr-capita income. Some of our poorest nations today have plenty of natural resources, but have act devel<»ped the human resources to utilise them. Other nations, like Switzerland or Denmark, with few natural resources have high pcr-capita income through good, sound educational systems. Individual income follows the same general pattern. Heads of famibea with less than 8 years of schooling have a median money income of about >3,000, as compared with 14.100 for those with 8 years of school. >5.400 for those with high school. >7.100 for four years of college, and >8.200 for those with 5 years or more of college. Earnings of college graduates average more than twice the earnings of those who do not complete elementary school. But to become a college graduate, a strong, basic education is necessary in pre-college years, and most students will get this through the public school system. Trained manpower is needed badly in this country. Citizens must be informed to meet their growing responsibilities. People today have more spare time than ever before. Will the time be used in pursuits that enrich life? The answer lies in the educational institutions that we maintain. Home rule is very important to all of us. We want to control our own destinies. But how can we do this, unless we are educated to do it? A sound program of education is essential to any program of home rule. We cannot have home rule without it. Let’s think first of the educational program which our schools should have. Comprehensive programs are highly expensive in small school systems. (Not necessary so in small schools, but in small school systems.) Test the feasibility of a county unit before thinking of possible smaller units. Most of Indiana’s counties ' have insufficient pupil population for more than one unit. Some people are still misunderstanding the school reorganization act. It reorganizes the systems, not the buildings. You can have just as many schools, or more if you want them, with a county unit. But everyone will share in the expense on the same basis. Teacher pay would be on the same scale throughout the county, tending to equalize the cost of education. Schools would still be controlled locally. There would still be principals, superintendents, and school boards elected on a local basis. But administration would be simplified, purchasing would be improved, costs per pupil would be dowh. - " n
