Dr. Finch Denies He Murdered Wife LOS ANGELES 'UPI> — Dr R. Bernard Finch looked so cool on the witness stand. So harmless and relaxed that if only the jury would listen carefully they would know he could never have murdered his wife. The poise of the 42-year-old doctor has to be seen to be -believed. He is either completely innocent—of murder not philandering — or he outshines the Hollywood arena in which his trial is set Finch’s story is full of chinks still to be filled but his sincerity and amiability are such that had half the jury grinning Wednesday* within minutes after taking the stand—while his mistress, Carole Tregoff. was obviously enjoying her lover’s little wisecracks. That’s the rub of the Bernard Finch-Carole Tregoff murder trial Can the jury believe that he ‘ absolutely did not*' murder Mrs Barbara Jean Finch and that he ‘ certainly did not” conspire to have her killed for pay? His Voice Clear That’s what he said Wednesday in his baptism on the stand as he brushed aside the microphone every other witness has used and spoke m a loud and clear voice. He will be back today for a full account of his love affair with .KOTICK OP ADMINISTHATIOX Kstate .No. BSUIn the Adam» Circuit Court of Adams County. i Carole and the killing of his wife. Later, that poise may melt unI der what is sure to be something I i less than an understanding crossexamination by prosecution attor--1 neys who intend to send him and i the red-haired Carole to the gas i chamber if they can. Finch’s own story had hardly j been begun but his defense attor--1 ney. Grant E. Cooper, sketched Ht in some length for him. This is what the jury must believe: —The death gun went off when he “started to throw it” as his wife fled down the driveway of their West Covina, Calif., home. Cooper did not say whether he I was throwing it away or at his wife, but left the former implication. z - Fled From Scene —Although a auctor pledged to help a patient, it was sheer panic that sent him fleeing through the night after a final gasped conversation before his wife died as he knelt over her. —Finch would never have begun his affair with Carole had not his wife deprived him of; sexual rolMfoM and the two of them reached an “armistice agreement" to go their separate When Finch first took the stand Cooper asked: ' “Dr. Finch, did you on the night of July 18, 1959. murder your wife?” - . x. T “Absolutely not.” “Or at any other time?” K Cooper asked if Finch conspired with John Patrick Cody or Carole in murder. „ “No sir. I certainly did not.
