South Bend Youth <& Is Victim Os Fire SOUTH BEND, Ind. <UPD — Three member* of a family of Jour escaped a fire to their home today, but Fred Vaughn, 18. failed to get out and died from heat and smoke, police said. Police said the fire apparently started in the living room, but the cause was undetermined. The dead boy’s mother, Phylis, 45, suffered second and third degree burns and was taken to a hospital where she was listed in poor condition. The father, George 47, suffered minor cuts on his arms and legs as he carried his wife out of the house. Another son. Phillip, 14, escaped injury.
