Mrs. Carolyn Baumgart tier, who hai been operating the Family Inn since last summer on the comer of Winchester street extended, and highway 27, has closed that restaurant, and is reported about ready to open up in the hotel building, where Walter Clem has been operating a restaurant for nearly a year. Also. Mrs. Pauline Haugk. who has been employed by Kent Realty-for 10 years, and who recently got her r «»a) estate license, will open her own office in the \ oglewede & Anderson building on the corner of Third and Madison streets. The Lose building, where the Blackstone was formerly located, and which has been boarded up more than a year since the big fire, is now being repaired, but no announcement has been made concerning what business will go in there. It is also understood that later this spring the Suttles Insurance Agency will move next door to where the Budget Loan is now located, and that attorney John DeVoBB will move into the Suttles building downstairs.

I would like to get a few things off my cheat 1 have written some stories for the paper, but I want to "spout off' to a strictly personal way. It la tolt thnt a news story to no place for editorializing, and thia la strictly persona! opinion I have great admiration for the thugs the government of the Revolution is trying to accomplish Wr saw many of these things in action All over Cuba, new streets arc being built, new schools, new hospitals and new housing developments are going up. Reports have it that the tourist doesn't see the real Cuba. That underneath it all lies fear and terror. It is also a fact that while governments can cover up what they are doing, the face* of the people will still reflect any fear they feel. The faces of Cuba do NOT reflect fear. Neither do the eves of people show fear. They reflect the hope and optimism for a better future. In this admiration, I don’t want to give the impression that Cuba Is a perfect nation. There are problems to solve that will take a lot of time and a lot more serious thought than has yet been applied. There are mistakes to be justified and set right if the government is to achieve its ultimate goals. But to go to Cuba, or to Sandusky or to Adams county and see one spot of dirt and then hurry away and tell the world that this place is filthy, is a lie, not in the essence of telling a mis-truth, but in the fact of failing to tell the complete truth. One of the many places I visited outside of the church tour was the fourth district police station in Havana. This was not a tourist spot. It was about ten-thirty at night, and there was no advance preparation. We were walking down the street with some Cuban friends, noticed the building, and asked if we might see it, as a test of some of the things we had read in the papers. There was not a moment’s hesitation about letting us in. It looked like a typical police station, with the exception that the uniforms were olive drab instead of blue. We toured the building, shook hands and talked with several of the police, and went our way. It was also interesting to note that I felt a lot safer walking through the dark and narrow streets of Havana late at night than I could feel in Chicago. There is undoubtedly Cuba, as everywhere else, but it’s not out in the open. ~ . Another report from Cuba is that the housing developments of the government are being erected in slum areas. Again this is a mistruth through the failure to tell the complete story. Some of the housing is going up in slum areas, which seems to be a standard way of clearing any slum, either in Havana or Pittsburgh. But I stood inside a housing development about a mile or so from Havana on a beautiful sea-shore site just off the four-lane highway to Mantanzas. If these are slums, my children should live in slums, so Dad could come and visit them. Climbing off the soap box, I have never visite# a city as interesting as Havana. This was my first trip away from the United States, so I have no basis for comparison with other countries, but I fell for the Havana atmosphere like a cliched ton of bricks. Illinois, and myself inquired as to the location of a beach. We walked two blocks and caught our bus. It was about U miles to the beach, and the ride was wonderful The driver roared through the narrow streets with six Inches to spare on either side of the bus at what seemed like 40 miles an hour. The bus was not new. and rattled like a truck-toad of junk. Above the rattles roared the horn, almost continuously. In the rear of the bus, three Americans were having a ball None of us spoke Spanish, few of the Cuban passengers knew any English, and we ass sat there and laughed like we hadn’t a cate In the world. To tell the truth, at that time, we didn’t. The Cubans were laughing just as loud. Probably at us instead of with us, but nobody cared. The bus finally left us at “Coney Island." That was what the sign said. We walked through the amusement park, and saw all the frightened and terrified Cubans having just as much fun as any Americans ever had at an amusement park with their children. This was just one of the many wonderful experiences we had in Cuba with a lot of people who couldn’t have been friendlier, made a lot of friends in Cuba, and one of the most interesting things I learned was that children in Cuba laugh and play in English. At least, when people laugh and try to be friends, there’s no mistaking their meaning. So. here we sit, back in front of our trusty Royal, very slightly tanned, and with Wonderful memories. Just to set the record straight for those who might be concerned. I didn’t miss any of the church meetings. The extra activities were mostly done during the time when sensible folks are in bed. But who ever heard of a sensible newspaper man? Star Player When Willie May. local Kroger employe told Ralph Smith,„Jr., that he was “pretty good” at ping pong, Ralph didn’t believe him. The Decatur milkman practiced up a little and then challenged May to five games of table tennis. Ralph learned, to his chagrin, that May wasn’t kidding a bit, as he went down to defeat in five straight Good Diet When Larry Anspaugh left for a week’s trip to Rochester, N.Y. recently, he left specific instructions on the lunches that were to be served by a local diner to his son while he was gone. When he returned, he was handed a bill for a number of candy bars, cokes, milk shakes, and hamburgers. After his sen, David, got a strong lecture on the value of a good diet, the restaurant owner showed up with the real bill, for the meals served, and everyone had a good laugh. -30-
