Plmm, Mr. Driver F«t»u«ry l> very likely to be • month of mow and ice in Adam* county—and wa haven t had much winter weather aa yet. There a a rood chance that, unleaa our driven are quite careful, an accident will take some life when the fnrting weather Anally cornea. A friend Sf oun han asked us to re-run the following. which we ran laat fall. It’a a letter from a father to a driver. -Dear Driver: -A few weeks ago. 1 saw a little girl struck by a car as she tried to cross the street. 1 saw her father race toward her and hold her to him as she struggled in the agony of death. 1 saw all the plans that had been made for her dashed and I saw the look of despair that came over his face. I could only offer a prayer that such a thing might never happen again. “Today my daughter, who is 6 years old, started off to school. Her cocker spaniel, whose name is Scoot, watched her leave and whined his belief in the folly of education. “Tonight we talked about school. She told me about the girl who sits in front of her with yellow curls, and about the boy across the aisle who makes faces; about the teacher who has eyes in the back of her head; about the trees in the school yard and the big girl who does not believe in Santa Claus. “We talked about a lot of things — tremendously vital ahd unimportant things. “Now, as this is written, she is sound asleep with her doll, Teddy’ in her arms. “When her doll gets broken or her finger gets cut or her head gets bumped, I can fix them. But when she starts across the street, then Mr. Driver, she is in your hands. “Much as I wish I could, it’s not possible for me to be with her all the time. I have to work to pay for her home, her clothes, her education. “So, Mr. Driver, please help me to look out for her. Please drive carefully. Please drive slowly past schools and intersections. And please remember that sometimes children run from behind parked cars. “Please don’t run over my little girl! “With deepest thanks for whatever you can do for her, I am, > Very sincerely yours, (Signed) Father

What ia right here is not always right some where else What works bort will not alway* work in othtjr countries People are different, and they have their own conceptions of what they want and what they need. A large part of Cuba b devoted to the sugar cane crop. Thouaanda of acres are owned by the large sugar plantations. The people who worked those plantations lived In unbelieveably bad conditions. Wooden one-room shacks with dirt floors were their homes They were not paid in money, but in credit at a company store. As they worked only part of the year, they had to draw more from the store than they would get credit for. As the song goes, they got “another day older and deeper in debt.” Since they were in debt, they were unable to leave and look for a better job, had there been a better job, and had they been able to do the work. Despite thia poverty, the people were not allowed to plant a fruit tree in their yard: not allowed to have flowers in their homes; not

People were starvtag to death while they could woe huge amounts at some of the most fertile soil on earth restlag. There ar* some wrongs ia the conflscattoa. Bmm of the land Is reported not to have been paid for. AU of it was paid far at very tow prices Yet the price paid for the confiscated land was th* same price th* owner* had placed oa it themselves far tax purpose* They were, in a sense, caught la a web of their own spinning. Another bit of background come* from past history. For almost SW years Latin America has been Wed by foreign interests. First, the Spaniards came and sailed away with fortunes in minerals, slaves and food. Then, with the eventual overthrow of the Spanish, foreign interests moved in.
Not aU these foreign interests were bleeders. But enough of them were to keep most of the workers in their same state of slavery. In any country, this wiD only be endured for so long, and then the people win find a leader. It is only natural that, having won their economic freedom, they tend to the opposite extreme. And people have a habit of forgetting things that are convenient to forget. After the American revolution. all the English interests were confiscated. The land belong ed to the young United States. Later, during the Indian wars, the Sioux Indians were given a treaty for most of the central plains paying them a generous four cents an acre. Those Indians have yet to receive a cent of the two million dollars the treaty promised. Land confiscation still has a nasty sound. But the ringing of a bell in a land with an established government, an established economy and society sounds different than the sound of a bell in a recently revolution-torn, struggling, economy-riddled country. In an established society that bell might be just a noisy nuisance. In other places it might be the thrilling ring of freedom, or the signal that another dictatorship has risen. Time, not hasty conclusions, should judge all people.
