; St. Louis Schools Closed By Strike ST. LOUIS (UPD—Strike-bound St. Louis public schools remained closed for the second day today, but striking janitors and matrons ■were to vote on a wage increase -proposal. ~ t , Local 118 of the Public School i Employes Union met with 11 of ; the school board’s 12 members Monday and the board made a proposal of a 5 per cent wage increase after July 1. The 553 strikers, consisting of janitors and matrons, were to meet this morning to vote on the proposal. The proposal also offers a second..per cent wage increase in the 1960-61 school year if the union can show its pay iF considerably ( under the average salary for such : work. .. »» The union went on strike Mon-. day for a 5 per cent increase and added the second 5 per cent demand later in the day. The school board said in its proposal that lack of funs prevented any pay raise until after July 1. The increase would total about SIIO,OOO a year or about S2OO for each worker. A few grade schools which had automatic furnaces remained open Monday as did nine of the 11 high schools. But all public schools were closed today, giving 102,000 students an unexpected holiday. Jacobs of 118 N Tenth, will go on tour with the Valparaiso Uni-' versity concert band Jan. 13-31 when the group makes its annual, winter trip between semesters. Jacobs plays the cornet and trampel. The 70-member band will play six concerts in Wisconsin and one each in Minnesota. lowa, and Illinois. before returning home for the , traditional tour-end concert in Vai-; paraiso First stop for the group will be Janesville, Wi*., Jan. 23. and the last performance before returning home will take place in Arlington Heights, 111., Jan. 30.
