About 40 coypu farms were in the country in the 30s. Its reddish-brown fur is known commercially as nutria. Competition and World War II ended the business and the-coypus were turned loose. They have flourished in local waterways and farmers complain that the animals are eating their sugar beets. Additionally, a local boy was knocked off his bicycle when a coypu leaped at him from behind a hedge. Questions have been raised in Parliament but too little is known about the coypu to do anything about the problem.
