MSO By Cartrar. 80 cant* par waal tonal* roptaa. 0 eaaU ' Horn# Rule One of the biggeat trouble# in Democratic government today in the tendency to take the eaay path—atate centralization—aa government become# more complex. Thia mean* increasing control from Washington or Indianapoli*. It alao mean* more bureaucratic control#, lea* response to the wiihea of the local people. One of the main target# of centralists is county government. More and more control of the county is being heaped on Indianapolis bureaus which s|>end more time justifying their positions than they do in working out what the people of the various counties need and want. A new organisation, Indiana Counties, Inc., is being formed to help county officials provide, on a local basis, the kind of service that the people want, without having to depend on bureaucrats 120 miles away. One of the officials of the new group. Jean K. LaGrange, of LaPorte county, spent Monday and Tuesday in Decatur, talking to county officials here. He has visited 62 counties, and received nearly unanimous approval of the new organization. As the result of his visit, Adams county will be featured.in.the February issue of "County Commissioner,” which will be published Feb. 5. He took several pictures in the court house, and of the officials there, and of the new county highway building at Monroe. The aasociation will have as its purpose education of the public, and research into the needs of county government. In addition, a school fo,r newly elected public Officials will be held, explaThThgTiTdetaTT the new duties. Manuals for officials will be given to each office. Mr. LaCrange, who has been a member of the state legislature as a state representative for the past three terms, was very impressive in his grasp of local problems. Forty years old, he is a native of Rush county, and has been living 15 years in LaPorte county where he was a radio news-reporter and owns a string of four weekly newspapers in the southern part of -the county. He is widely mentioned as a potential candidate for Lieutenant Governor on the Democratic ticket this year. Most county officials, including LaGrange, are quite concerned with the complete rule and dominance of the state government by the overgrown departments of the executive braenh and by powerful lobbying groups. The 61-day session of the state legislature is largely influenced by these two groups, and the Indiana Counties, Inc. hopes to be able to unite the counties of the state intp an effective group which will present the “local” side of the question.
