Heaviest Rainfall Os Year In State Vailed Pre** IfiteraaUanal The new year's heaviest rainfall pelted Indiana today and set the stage for what could be recordbreaking high temperatures. Nearly 1H inches of rain fell at South Bend during a 24-hourj period ending near dawn today. | and pther upstate weather stations recorded moderate amounts, including .11 of an inch at Fort Wayne. Elsewhere, the precipitation was very light and mostly in drizzle form. Foggy conditions prevailed ; Forecasts called for temperatures in the 60s today and Tuesday over the southern two-thirds of Hoosierland, with indications the peak readings might reach or surpass those of Dec. 27. when alltime highs for the date were recorded The rain appeared to have invaded the state for a lengthy stay. Forecasts called for light to heavy rain today, lightest in the south and heaviest in the extreme northwest. More rain was expected Wednesday and Thursday, largely on a scattered shower basis. The mercury hit 63 at Evansville Monday, far above the readings at peak points elsewhefe. At South Bend, the high was only 36. at Fort Wayne 37. at Indianapolis Overnight lows ranged frorrt 32freezing at Fort Wayne to 50 at Evansville. Today’s highs will range from 48 to 55 in the north to 60 to 67 ' in the south, tonight s lows from 42 to 48 in the north to the 50s | in the south, and Wednesday’s highs from the tow 50s north to the mid COs south.

Tex., Monday and said he | liked being on his own and would rather not return to Indiana. Mrs. George R. Bradley said her son told her he was working in an Odessa service station I about 400 miles from the place where his car was found aban-. doned along a desolate country, road near Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, j "The call came as a complete shock,, Mrs Bradley said, "but I’m surprised and happy about' the whole thing—just to know j Billy is all right. I ate my first I meal today since the boy left I home.” The youth drove away from j home Jan. 1 and his car .was discovered near the Pan American {highway a few days later.
