Richie Ashburn Os Phillies Is (Traded To Cubs CHICAGO (UPD — The major league’s newest trade today sent veteran centerfielder Richie Ashburn from the Philadelphia Phillies to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for third baseman Alvin Dark and two other players. Oficials of both clubs said the deal was just what the doctor ordered. Phillies Manager Eddie Sawyer, who also picked up righthanded pitcher Johnny Buzha:dt and rookie third baseman Jim Woods,' said both clubs profited by the deal. “Ashburn is a good ball player add should help the Cubs.” he said. "Dark will be a steadying influence in our infield and he should be able to play about half I the games.” Cub General Manager John Holland said the swap crowned win-ter-long efforts to land the 32-year-old Ashburn. “Ashburn led the league in getting on base,” Holland said. “He’s just what We, needed. We now have him and Tony Taylor batting in front of Ernie Banks." Cub Manager Charlie Grimm was certain the deal would also bolster his club’s outfield defense, which has been the poorest in the league. “We’ve got someone who can catch the ball,” he said. — Both Grimm and Holand said they were reluctant to part with Dark, a 37-year-old veteran who had been mentioned as a possible Cub manager in the future.
