Woman Driver Faces Charges In Florida OCALA. Fla. <UPD-Mrs. Margaret G. Stewart, wife of an Indiana businessman, faced charges of manslaughter and hiturun driving today in the death of a young girl and injury of another. The victims were schoolmate) of her daughter. Dorothy Updike. 7. was killed and Kayla Lopaty. 9. was injured slightly when they were struck by a car as they walked home from school. Investigators said the two girls were walking beside a road facing traffic when a car swerved off the road, struck them and kept going. Police said Mrs. Stewart, formerly of Oolitic, Ind., was arrested at her home here about an hour after the accident. She was charged Tuesday. "I thought I had hit a post,” officers quoted Jdrs. Stewart as saying. Friends said Mrs. Stewart’s husband, Douglas F.. was owner of the Ideal Manufacturing Co., Indianapolis. The couple lived at a comfortable ranch . home here on a 350-acre estate. Police said Mrs. Stewart kept going ffter accident and picked up het own 12-year-old daughter at the school, then returned by the scene of the tragedy without stopping. ... The driver was traveling about 45 miles an hour in a 15-mile-an-hour school zone when the accident occurred, police estimated. The Updike child’s leg was severed by the car's grill and her head struck the hood. An unidentified school teacher saw the damage to Mrs. Stewart's car and took down the license number. Police traced Mrs. Stewart to her home where they said she appeared surprised to see thetn, Her bond was set at 110,000.
