Asst Atty. Gen. Charles K. Rice, chief of the department s tax division, said Sunday night in a year-end report to Atty. Gen. William P. Rogers that income tax cheats are costing the treasury large amounts in revenue. Rice said his division was setting up a program for cracking down on persons who claim false dependency exemptions and in a "substantial number’’ of cases involving “wilful omission’* of dividend and interest income from tax returns. In another year-cnd report,. acting Asst Atty. Gen. Robert A. Bicks said 63 anti-merger cases were filed last year, more than in any year since 1943. Bicks said Justice Department attorneys were concentrating on "vigorous enforcement" of the Clayton Act’s anti-merger provisions to help growing new industries survive in competition with giant corporations. notice of annual meeting of LAND OCCUPIERS TO BE HELD FOR ADAMS COIHkTT SOIL CONSERVATION DISTkICT To all occupiers pt land lying w!tmn the boundaries the ADAMS COUNTY Soil Conservation District, notice is hereby »’ v «" ‘ h » t J?" 19th day of January, <19«0. beginning at «:U p.m.. an annual meeting will be held for the purpose of mailing a full and due report of their activities and financial since the last annual to elect a supervisor for ‘ he Adams County Soil Conservation District of the State of Indiana. Seek Death Penalty For Finch, Tregoff LOS ANGELES <UPD —The state today was expected to ask the death penalty for Dr. R Bernard Finch and his paramour Carole Tregoff accused of killing the physician’s estranged wife to get her share of the family fortune. The prosecution, which will lead off with opening arguments, contends the motive for the fatal shooting was a desire by Finch, 43, to wed his 23-year-old former receptionist without having to split an estimated $750,000 in community property with his 33-year-old wife, Barbara. The prosecution further contends that Finch and Miss Tregoff carried a "murder kit” July 18 to do away with Mrs. Finch by medical means,, but shot her instead when a Swedish exchange student interrupted their plans. Mrs. Finch instituted a divorce action against her handsome, ten-nis-player huband May 20, less than two months before her body was found shot through the back on the lawn of the $65,000 Finch home in nearby West Covina, Under Califorhia law, community property is shared equally by a divorced couple. Both Finch and Miss Tregoff are charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murdedr. Conviction of first degree murder here carries a possible death sentence. Arkansas Wins In Gator Bowl, 14-7 JACKSONVILLE. Fla (UPD — Both coaches agreed that Arkansas' backfield speed was the difference In the Razorbacks’ 14-7 win over Georgia Tech in the Gator Bowl Saturday. But the real heroes in the Razorback victory probably were Frank Broyles’ outweighed linemen who held Tech scoreless for the last three quarters. Tech Coach Bobby Dodd said it would take three touchdowns to win and he was right. Broyles hadn't counted on more than two touchdowns and that was all he His light but rugged line, with a weight disadvantage of some 20 pounds per man. bottled up the Yellowjackets after trailing 7-0 In the first period, and Jim Mooty and company took care of the scoring department with tbuchdowns in the second and third periods. Tech was by far the superior team in the opening quarter, ■ controlling play for all but about two minutes, chiefly on ground plays up the middle. It looked like the biggest bowl game mismatch of the week end, with Arkansas gaining only three yards, i Quarterback Marvin Tibbetts set sail on a 51-yard scoring run in the closing seconds of the period and Tech was off to an early 7-0 lead. "We were just scared. Broyr les said after the game. “Bobby’s boys were ready and it took us a while to get started ” West’s All-Stars Win Shrine Thriller . I ’■* SAN FRANCISCO (UPD — Southern Methodist’s Don Meredith- - .Indiana’s Ted Aurcreman .. .College of Pacific's Dick Bass Oregon's John Wilcox. . .Notre Dame’s George Izo. , .Stanford’s Chris Burford. . .Clemson’s Lou Cordileone. , They were the brightest stars in the most sensational of al Shrine East-West games Saturday. Today they headed" back to school and the books — or to the next post-season games: The Senior Bowl at Mobile, Ala., and the Hula Bowl in Honolulu. But their memory will linger on in the wake of the West’s 2114 victory over the East on the strength of two touchdowns in the last three minutes of play. Meredith, who set a new Shrine game record by passing for 243 yards on 19 completions (no interceptions) in 37 tries, was voted the outstanding player of the game. And Cordileone was named the outstanding lineman. But there are many who thought otherwise. Wilcox, for instance, recovered two East fumbles that led to West . touchdowns. He also intercepted a pass, Aucreman, like Cordileone, broke through the West defenses time and again to throw the West backs, for huge losses — especially In the first half. Bass caught the winning touchdown, lugging the ball over from the nine while carrying Northwestern's Ron Burjton on his back.
