Six Big Ten Teams Beaten Monday Night United Press International Defending national champion California dumped Illinois, the Big Ten’s last undefeated team, out of the unbeaten ranks Monday to cap a day in which the powerful conference lost six of nine games to non-conference foes. At the Los Angeles basketball classic, California rolled over Illinois, 93-68, favored Southern California breezed past Northwestern, 81-62, and UCLA pounded Michigan, 93-68. A tough Kentucky team edged fourth-ranked Ohio State at Lexington, 96-93, but Indiana, another Kentucky visitor, defeated Maryland, 72-63, in the Bluegrass Festival Tourney at Louisville. lowa knocked off previously unbeaten New York University, SO--75, in the Holiday Festival Toruney at New York City. Tarheel Rally Counts North Carolina rallied to defeat Minnesota, 72-65. and underdog Canisius routed Wisconsin, 80-65. Michigan State defeated Big Ten trial horse Butler, 85-80, for the conference’s only other victory. Purdue was idle. At Los Angeles, unbeaten California, led by 6 foot 10 inch Darrel Imhoff’s 23 points, walloped the Illini in what was expected to be a close contest. Ball-hawking Cal defenders took the ball away from the ragged many times and only guard Nannie Jackson, with 17 points, was able to score well for the visitors. It was the 23rd straight win for the Bears. Well - balanced UCLA had no trouble overpowering Michigan, despite a brilliant 32-point performance by Wolverine' Captain Terry Miller, who played with a heavily-bandaged leg. The Uclans used second and third stringers in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Southern Cal* forward Johnny

Werhas, despite playing only twothirds of the game, led the Trojans past Northwestern with 22 points. The Wildcats, who lost their third straight game on the current West Coast trip, were led by Willie Jones wit h2O pointsBuckeyes Drop Cliffhanger Kentucky took the lead from a tall Ohio State team with only 45 seconds remaining in the game and held on for its three - point margin. The Buckeyes, led by talented sophomore center Jerry Lucas’ 34 points, had a 10-point edge at the half, but couldn’t hold it. Bill Lickert led the Wildcats with 29 points. Indiana guards Herbie Lee and Jerry Bass went on a shooting spree in the second half to lead the Hoosiers to their win over Maryland. The guards started firing when the Terrapins sagged to hold down Indiana center Walt Bellamy, who scored 25 points in the game, 18 in the first half. lowa’s alert Hawkeyes took advantage of the breaks in defeating unbeaten New York University. Don Nelson and Nolden Gentry paced the lowans with 19 and 18 points. Hawkeyes Gain Finals It was the second straight win for lowa over a New York team. In the first round the Hawkeyes defeated defending tourney champion St. Johns. They face the nation’s top-rated team, Cincinnati in the tournament finals Wednesday. In the Dixie Classic at Raleigh, N.C., highly-rated North Carolina found their shooting eye, in the second half to break through a tenacious Minnesota defense. Big Lee Shaffer led the Tarheels with 29 points, while Ron Johnson paced Minnesota with 23. Rejuvenated Canisius climaxed its return to big-time basketball at the expense o Wlsdonsin to win the Queen City Tournament at Buffalo. N.Y Junior forward Joe Loturco led the winners with 21 points. Michigan State fought back from a halftime deficit to take the lead from Butler with about 14 minutes left in the game. Dave Fahs for the Spartans and Orville Bose and Ken Pennington for Butler hit for 23 points each.

Hartford City Airedales Off To Bad Start The Holiday tourney at Portland Saturday shapes up to be a twoteam affair, Portland and Bluffton, with the tall, talented Tigers getting the nod on basis of tougher competition—according to the “experts," that is. Decatur’s Yellow Jackets, - the defending champs, and Hartford City’s Airedales are both suffering from a common Indiana ailrtient, winless-itis, this year. This pair will probably meet in the consolation contest Saturday night, if all goes by the book — again, according to the experts. Can’t Go By Book But, another thing in Indiana basketball is the lack of accuracy by the expert prognosticators come tourney-time. The season's records can usually be discounted at many sites, especially when the teams meeting are Bluffton, Portland, and Decatur. (Hartford City boasts no intense hatred for any of the three mentioned.) During the last two seasons at holiday time, Decatur’s hardcourters were not expected to have large source of basketball material, but somehow they copped the crowns on both occasions. This could happen again. The Airedales are coming into no-man’s land amidst a rivalry of three schools that is probably unparalleled in northeastern Indiana. They have a small team by today’s standards with only one boy, senior Howard Lamme, taller than 6-1. The 184-lb. center stands 6-4. Little Height, Good Beef

Next in line is Calvin Clamme, a rugged 205-lb. and 6-1 junior. Three other boys are 6-0 but two are comparative youngsters, John Rench is 174 lbs., and a sophomore, while Don Wimmer is 156 lbs. and a junior. Dave Wagner, 6-0 and 160, provides much help for the Blackford county squad. Like the Jackets, Hartford City lists several footballers on the net squad, which could account for the slow start. Dean Carbone, at 5-10 and 170, and Bill Crites, 5-10 and 180, are two of the backcourt men who have been slowly shaking off their football legs and adapting to the run-and-step of basketball. Mike Needier, 5-9 and 150, Terry Smith, 5-10 and 150, are two more veterans who assist in the Airedale backcourt. ? Other players Are Bill Jenkins, 5-11 and 150, a junior, and seniors Fred Malott, 5-7 and 152, and Fred Strine, 5-10 and 154. Decatur and Hartford City have had only one common opponent, both being subdued by Bluffton's Tigers. The Airedales dropped their season’s opener to the Tigers, 68-54, while the Jackets faltered at home last week, 80-51. The Airedales have won only one game to date. Comparative scores, however, prove as effective a guide for predicting the outcome of a high school basketball contest as flipping coins—so per cent of the time, you’re apt to be correct. Tickets Available Tickets are available at Holthouse on the Highway for all four games at 81.50. For single admissions, it’s sl, which must be purchased at the Rate. Three Os Top Ranked Teams Lose Monday By JOE SARGIS United Press International Utah, Illinois and New York University, three top-ranked basketball teams, ran into road blocks along the holiday tournament trail but Cincinnati, the nation's No- 1 team, kept right on ' rolling behind a new scoring ace. Fifth-ranked Utah was bounced from the Dixie Classic at Raleigh, N.C., Monday night when DUke's five “iron men" outran the Redskins in a 63-52 upset; ninthranked Illinois fell before thirdranked California, 62-48, in the Los Angeles Classic, and 10th ranked NYU wilted in the second half before lowa’s tall and speedy Hawkeyes, 80-75, to bow out of the Holiday Festival at New York. When St. Joe’s put two and sometimes three men on him, Oscar fed off to Wiesenhahn, who found little trouble hitting the mark. The 25 points gave Robertson, the national scoring champion hte last two years, 72 for two games and left him needing only 19 more to break the tourney record. Duke Reaches Semi Duke’s victory put the 18th ranked Blue Devils into the Dixie Classic semi-finals against 11th ranked North Carolina, which beat Minnesota, 72-65.
