Hundreds Are Stranded By Severe Storm United Press International The nation’s Midlands took a one-two punch from winter today that stranded holiday motorists along snow-clogged highways and planted a four-engine airliner on a sod runway. There was more bad weather to come. Blizzard conditions were forecast for eastern Nebraska and South Dakota, western lowa and southwestern Minnesota. A storm that dumped eight inches of snow in Nebraska and Missouri and left a trail of winter misery that dipped into the Texas panhandle. The new storm will bring four or more inches of snow, the U.S. Weather Bureau said, and it will be driven by winds up to 50 m.p.h A United Air Lines plane With 39 passengers aboard made an unscheduled landing at Council Bluffs, lowa, at midnight, when the pilot lost momentary contact with the neighboring Omaha. Neb. airport. The passengers waded off the field but the airline anticipated difficulty in moving the DC6 off the 3,000-foot bogged sod. Freezing rain was predicted for upstate New York into New England and in northern Wisconsin and lower Michigan, bringing hazardous driving conditions. While the winter drove hard at touch of the Midwest, in some states it was almost like spring. In the eastern Ohio Valley into the middle and south Atlantic states there were unseasonably warm temperatures—in the 50s—and in Chicago Loop shoppers and workers walked with overcoats unbuttoned. Warmth and rain erased most of the white Christmas. The storm, packing winds of nearly 60 m.p.h. as it moved into the upper Midwest, whipped the snow into huge drifts that blocked roads and knocked down utility lines. Hundreds of cars Were abandoned in Nebraska. lowa, the Dakotas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. Weary travelers sought shelter in farm homes. ’ and jammed hotels and motels in" the storm area. The U.S . Weather Bureau said the storm was centered in Iwa early this morning. Lamoni, lowa, and Omaha, Neb., had four inches on the ground and Lincoln, Neb., six. As the storm pushed eastward, temperatures dropped sharply and ‘“’"yai changed to snow in the Great Lakes area. Chicago reported a record high for today of 51 degrees but the weatherman said the mercury would drop almost 20 degrees by morning. Elsewhere around the, country, showers were forecast from Florida and eastern Alabama northward into the Ohio Valey and central Atlantic states with snow changing to freezing rain in most of New England. Generally fair skies and warmer weather were in store for most of the western half of the country. New Mexico, the panhandle region and Nebraska caught the full ftiry of the storm Sunday. The blizzard blew into the panhandle after dumping 8 to 10 inches of snow in eastern New Mexico during a 10-hour period. The panhandle was blanketed byt| eight inches and winds of 45 m.p.h. whipped five foot drifts across highways. A bus and 40 cars were stalled more than two hours near Clayton, N.M , before snowplows could clear a path for them. An estimated 600 travelers sought refuge in Vaughn and Encino, N.M., to escape the blinding storm which cut visibility to zero and forced all highways in a 50-mile radius to be closed. Cuban Government Arrests Four Men HAVANA (UPD—Secret agents of the national police arrested four “counter - revolutionaries” here over the weekend on charges of plotting sabotage on orders from anti-government Gen. Jose Pedraza Cabrera. He has been in exile in the Dominican Republic since overthrow of the Fulgencio Batista regime and was not among the suspects held in Cabana fortress. The prisoners were identified as Diosdado Rivera, Paulino Perez, Pedro Figueredo and Juan J. Zamora No details of their alleged plot w»* r e made public. Tn another weekend development. the foreign ministry rejected Udited States protests against Premier Fidel Castro's land reform program, citing “the irresistible win to freedom” as justification for government acts. A pamphlet published by the foreign office aligned Cuba with the Afro-Asiatic “neutralist” bloc, officially siding neither with the United States nor Russia. The pamphlet denied that Castro’S revolutionary regime organized recent invasions of Nicaragua. It called foj, an inter-Ameri-can “human rights court” rather than a police force to protect nations of the western hemisphere against attack from abroad.
