NOTES FROM AFTER THIRTY By JACK HELLER PRIVATE EYE Herman Kryeckeberg, cashier at the First State Bank, tells a humorous story about his son, Dan. When the young man jn question was many years younger, his parents, brother and himself resided on North Second street. The lot next door to their residence was empty, and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Cal Peterson. One had some slakes for a nouse put on the lot. Herman and Dan were watching the process, and Cal walked over and handed Dan a. quarter. He asked Dan to keep an eye on the stakes and make sure that nobody botherrtl them. A few days later, the Krueckebergs were in Mr. Peterson’s clothing store, and Cal asked Dan if he was keeping a good watch on die stakes. Dan answered that he was taking real good care of them. Some of the kids in the neighborhood had started messing with them, so he pulled up and piled them on the*back porch where he could be sure that no one wouldybother them. e MERRY CHRISTMAS, GRANDPA John Doan gets credit for the best answer of the Christmas season. Mr. and Mrs. Doan have eight grandchildren plue four children to prepare for. Thursday, as the great day approached, some one asked Mr. Doan what he knew. “I know who Santa Claus is,” was the reply. FOR 1960 We would like to apologize for the last column of the year, not in quality, but in quantity. What with all the rush both at work and at home with the three children, we just didn’t spend the time eavesdropping that is usually spent. Anyway, we want to wish you a very happy new year. Being optimistic about things, it’s nice to look to the future and look for better things. The past may have been good or may have been bad .but we can always look for and work for and hope for better things to come. James Whitcomb Riley summed up our New Year’s message very neatly when he wrote: “Let us fold away our fears, And put by our foolish tears, And through all the coming years, Just be glad.” HlPcSfiyL wti iw years BOWER JEWELRY STORE Decatur Indiana

Two Deaths Termed • • ■ Murder And Suicide CARMEL, Ind. (UPD— Roland B. Lagley 34, Carmel, was shot to death In the bedroom of his home here Friday morning and his bro-ther-in-law, Helmuth Lecher, 46, Indianapolis, was found dead of self-inflicted shotgun wounds shortly afterwards. Hamilton County Sheriff Mark Passwater said it was a case of murder and suicide. Authorities said Lecher, a German immigrant, apparently broke into Lagle’s home, shot the man as he opened a bedroom door, then drove a few blocks into Marion County and turned the shotgun on himself. Lecher was separated from his wife, Erika, 46, who was staying at the Lagle home. ft To Crack Down On Business Expenses WASHINGTON (UPD — T h e Internal Revenue Service <IRS> is preparing to get tough with corporations that allow their officials to "live it up" on tax-deduc-tibe expense accounts. Informed sources said the government was likely to change corporate tax forms so that companies will be required to answer detailed Questions about deductions claimed as “ordinary and necessary” business expenses. But no change will be made in the tax forms filed by some 60 million individual taxpayres. The new questions would go on next year’s corporate forms, not this year’s. An announcement of IRS action may be forthcoming next week. This would give companies a full year’s notice of the scrutiny due to come on the returns they file in 1961. Highly placed Revenue Service sources acknowledged Friday night that the “get tough” decision was in large part inspired by pressures from congressmen. Several told* Tax Commissioner Dana Latham they don’t know, how to answer letters from ■ftbfers wKo'cbmplain about who live ft up on’ business expense accounts I Bluffton Building To Yost Construction A new building with 24,000 feet of floor space, and costing SIIO,OOO will be constructed in Bluffton by the Yost Construction company of Decatur for the Franklin Electric , company. , The new addition will be south j of the, 1959 construction on Spring , I street, and when the intervening I walls are removed, will become a , part of the main plant.
