St. Joe Wins Series Opener Monday Night The St. Joseph Pirates won the first leg .on the Decatur city grade school championship Monday evening, defeating the Decatur Junior Jackets, 26-22, at the Lincoln school gym. , St. Joe appeared headed for a runaway in this city series opener, rolling up 11 points in the first quarter while holding Junior high scoreless. The second quarter, however, was a complete reversal. The Junior Jackets held the Pirates to only two points, both on free throws, while racking up 13 markers to send the teams to the dressing rooms at the half all deadlocked at 13-13. It was a close battle the rest of the way. St. Joe held a margin of 20-18 at the end of the third period, and increased its final advantage to four points at the end of the ball game. Gase, of St. Joe, was the game’s top scorer with 10 points. Swy* gart topped the Junior Jackets with seven points, as all 10 start- ■ ers in the game invaded the scor-I ing column. Each team had eight field goals, with St. Joe’s margin j at the foul line, where the Pirates J converted 10 of 20 free throws, the Junior Jackets six of 18. There were 14 fouls called on the Jackets. 13 on the Pirates. No date has been set for the? second game of the best-of-three series. City police reported that Frank Straub, 75. of 148*6 N. Second street, sustained a slightly injured right! knee when he was struck by a car driven by M. H. Luhman, of 727 N. Fifth street. The Luhman car was parked on Second street and was backing out of the parking spot. The car driven by Eugene E. McDonald, 34, of Willshire, 0., was totally wrecked when it struck a car driven by Kathryn*A. Shaffer, 20, of 904 N. 13th street. McDonald told police that he didn’t see the Shaffer car until they collided. The McDonald car was making a left turn onto Monroe street, as the Shaffer car was going west on Monroe. Damage to the Shaffer car was about $l5O, while the McDonald machine was totally demolished.
