Plan Welcome For Ike On Return Home WASHINGTON (UPD - Hundreds of dignitaries and thousands of other Americans will give President Eisenhower a cheering, torchlight welcome home tonight from' his Christmas season quest for peace on earth. Vice President Richard M. Nixon will head the estimated 500 to 600 U S. and foreign officials who will greet Eisenhower at nearby Andrews Air Force Base, Md. Nixon has urged Americans to give the Chief Executive an enthusiastic reception when he returns from “this terribly hard schedule in the service of the cause of peace.” Sparkler Display The President’s luxurious fourengine jetliner was scheduled to land at 10:50 p.m. e.s.t., bringing him home from his exhausting 11nation, 23,000-mile mission in time to spend Christmas with his family. 4 After simple ceremonies at the a’rport, 15 miles from the capital. , Elsenhower will ride to. the White House along the same route taken by Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev in September. Throngs of applauding, cheering well-wishers were expected to line his path. When he reaches the executive mansion, the President will be greeted by a spectacular display of 15,000 giant sparklers, highlight of the gala welcome. To Light Tree City officials went ahead with plans for the torchlight display in Lafayette Park, just across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House despite a warning from fire safety spokesmen that the 36-inch sparklers were "dangerous and illegal.” Loudspeakers have been installed to notify the crowd when the President is nearing the executive mansion. The plan calls for the spatkiers to be lit all at once as a brilliant tribute to Eisenhower’s pre-Christmas journey in search of peace. Wednesday Eisenhower will light the national community Christmas tree in a park behind the White House- He was expected to discuss his trip in his Christmas message to the nation on radio and television. WintefOfficially Arrives In Nation United Press International The first day of winter brought up to six inches of snow and cold and blustery winds to the East and Southwest today. Winter arrived officially at 8:35 a.m. e.s.t., but the storm got a 12-hour jump on the season, covering New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania with four to six inches of snow. The storm, propelled by 25-35 m.p.h. winds, was expected to strike central and southern New England today with four or more inches of snow. Driving conditions were extremely hazardous through Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. At least two highway deaths in Pennsylvania were blamed on the snow and ice which clogged most highways, caused a six-car crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and tied up traffic in and near New York City. In the Southwest, localy heavy snowfalls piled as much as six inches on parts of Utah, western Colorado, northern Arizona and New Mexico- Rain dampened the southern edges of the snow area. New York Ctiy reported four inches of snow and six inches in the suburbs. The storm delayed flights at Idlewild and La Guardia airports, closed the East River Drive and Belt Parkway and sparked a flurry of minor skidding collisions and long traffic tieups. The mercury dropped to five degrees above zero during the night near the Canadian border from Minnesota to Maine and hovered in the 10’s or 20’s above the Ma-son-Dixon line. The U.S. Weather Bureau predicted the eastern storm would end today, but more snow flurries were forecast for the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi Valley, western Nebraska and the central Rockies and the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Rain was predicted for western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas and the coastal regions of the far Northwest. Plan Open House Saturday Evening The Decatur Knights of Colum bus council will conduct an open house Saturday with all members bringing one “white elephant” gift for an exchange to a “pawn broker.” The doors will open at 7 p. m. with trading beginning at 7:30 p.m. and a contest to follow at 8:15 p.m. The latest K. of C. newsletter pictures 44 elected and appointed officers, wishing the council members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Trade in a good town — Decatur.
