< . j COMMODORES The only difference between the Decatur Catholic-Commodores the Pleasant Mills Sparants Friday night at the Spartan gym was a couple of inches. And the Commodores used that height advantage under both boards to outlast the tireless Spartans. 60-56. Although winning by only four points, the Commodores held a wide 16-point lead with 4:15 to play in the frantic contest, and then Coach Al Lindahl emptied his bench. Spartans are Spartans A bunch of running terrors, the Spartans almost caught up with the lead 'as veteran Jack Butler [ led the uphill climb. But with :14i to play and the score 56-52. sopho-l more Steve Blythe drove under for; a quick two-pointer, icing the con- j test. Senior Commodore Don Baker netted 23 points to lead both teams, setting the scoring pace in a wild third period with 10 points as DCHS pulled away after a whirlwind first half. with the Spartans in the first two The Commodores tried to run J periods, and that proved to be a willy nilly 16 minutes of ’.‘who's got the ball.” After settling down to serious basketball, the smaller Spartans could not cope with the tall timber from Decatur. Commenting on the game, Coach Lindahl said. “We played our most spirited ball since the Monroeville game. The seniors showed real hustle and desire. It looked like they really wanted to play basketball.” The past several games were rather lackluster for the Commodores, but they put out a fine hustling effort last night as county tourney time approaches. Good Board Work Commodore Steve Omlor showed to his best advantage all season as he dominated the control of the defensive backboard assisted ably by Tom Gross. Tom Kohne, and Jerry Heiman. The offensive boards were a little weak as the speedy Spartans managed to grpb half of the rebounds there. The Commodores are now 3-6 for the schedule Tuesday at Monmouth; Coach Bob Davis’ team is 1-10 with Geneva Kbstihg them on Tuesday.Commodore* FG FT TP j Baker ....- 9 5 23 • S.
