Highway Crews Battle Drifts To Reach 800 United Press International Highway crews battled through 13-foot snow drifts Thursday to reach about 800 travelers stranded at Vaughn, N.M., in the state's second worst snowstorm in history. The same storm swirled into the Texas Panhandle with winds up to 60 miles an hour and deposited a foot of snow in some places. The highway crews, aided by state police and National Guard units, were reported only three miles from Vaughn after an exhausting 48-hour battle through the drifts- „ The snow ended Wednesday, but rain which spread from New Mexico into the lower Ohio Valley formed slush, then ice on the treacherous highways. The highway crews managed to bring supplies to a second besieged town, Encino, but another band of travelers was reported encamped there for the second night. A National Guard plane dropped 3,200 pounds of hay to sheep isolated in drifts. The rain was expected to leave New Mexico today, but the Weather Bureau said it would fall from eastern Texas and Oklahoma across the Ohio Valley and Gulf states into the lower Great Lakes. Up to an inch of rain fell during the night at Jackson, Miss., Baton Rouge, La., and Fort Sill, Okla. A few light showers were reported in the Great Lakes and New England. Other showers were forecast for ’the Pacific Northwest, with a few snow flurries in Minnesota and northern New England.
Demand Explanation On Policing Airmen WASHINGTON (UPI) — Two senators today pressed their demands for an explanation of why an Air Force general wanted to set up a “Big Brother” system for policing the private lives of 'airmen even though he abandoned the idea... Sen. Thomas C. Hennings (DMo.l, who had written Air Force Secretary Dudley C Sharp for a full report, did not withdraw his request after the "Big Brother” policy was rescinded at a Kansas bomber base. A spokesman said Hennings, chairman of the Senate subcommittee on constitutional rights, still wanted to know whether such a policy was being followed elsewhere in the Air Force. Sen. Mike Mansfield (Mont.), Senate Democratic whip, also called for an explanation from the Strategic Air Command. Hennings said the policy established and then withdrawn by Brig. Gen. Ariel W. Nielsen at Forbes Air Force Base might have abridged constitutional safeguards protecting airmen. Mansfield said that if Nielsen continued to have any idea of “going into the private lives of individuals day to day” then the matter would still be open to question. In a policy letter issued Tuesday, Nielsen had ordered the screening of “every detail, including performance reports, personal history testaments, deorgatory files, promotion selection folders and unit files” of his airmen. Reports also were ordered on what each airman does with his off-duty time and who his associates were.

The craft designed to take man to the fringes of space 100’ miles up was being carried aloft by a giant B-52 jet preparatory to being released under its own power when the test was postponed.
