Move To Stop Matt Welsh Is On In State By EUGENE J CA.DOU United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—'Whether present rear-running candidates for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination can stop the current leader, Sen. Matthew E. Welsh, is of concern to party leaders today. A stop-Welsh movement is under way and possible participants are his' rivals. Secretary of State John R. Walsh. Anderson; State Auditor Albert Steinwedel, Seymour; Terre Haute Mayor Ralph Tucker; Roger D. Branigin, Lafayette lawyer; Bloomington Mayor Tom Lemon; and Sep. Nelson Grills, Indianapolis. Current strategy is to get together on a nominee to challenge renomination of ailing State Treasurer Jack Haymaker, Logansport. Haymaker is favored by former National Chairman Frank McKinney, Indianapolis banker, because the state treasurer has much to do with the deposit of state funds in Hoosier banks. McKinney also is sponsoring Welsh's gubernatorial bid. May Pick Fortune Former State Treasurer William Fortune, Indianapolis, has been proposed to the allies as a candidate against Haymaker or whoever is McKinney’s choice for the nomination. When Fortune held the office he was a Republican Then he failed in an attempt to be the GOP nominee for lieutenant governor and switched to • the Democratic party. Fortune directed the “dollars for .Democrats” campaign over the state and has been an active Democrat in other ways. The state convention vote on treasurer would be a test of strength between the McKinneyWelsh group and opponents. If successful, the opponents of Welsh may agree to unite on the candidate receiving the largest vote •on the first ballot besides Welsh, who is expected to lead. This strategy might land the nomination for Walsh, Welsh’s strongest rival. A similar plot failed to halt the nomination of Sen. Vance Hartke in 1958 because his opponents couldn’t get together, despite pleas of Mayor Tucker. Jenner Stopped Similarly This strategy was successful in 1948 when Sen. William E. Jenntr Was frustrated in his bid for the GOP nomination for governor. Former Gov. Ralph F. Gates at that time master-minded the stopJenner drive. The anti-Jenner candidates met and agreed that the strongest opponent in early balloting would receive the strength of the others. Former House speaker Hobar Creighton, Warsaw, was stongest and went on to garner the .nomination. But political observers agree that there is no one as foxy among the Democrats as Gates to direct the maneuver- Also, Gates at tha time was armed with potent Statehouse patronage. Boh Welsh and Grills have formally announced for Governor. Similar announcements are expected soon from Walsh and Steinwedel. There’s a lot of doubt about Tucker. Branigin and Lemon. Former Rockettes Aiding Retarded By GAY PAULEY UPI Women's Editor PELHAM MANOR, N.Y. (UPD —The room in which the three former rockettes now dance is a far step from the giant stage of Radio City Music HallOnce they were part of that famous precision fine which entertains millions. Now, their audience is smaller, their dancing for a diferent purpose. The three are pioneers in the Rockette Alumnae Association’s volunteer project of dancing classes for retarded children. Once a week, Mrs. Harry Mayer of New Rochelle. Mrs. Leon Bleyer of Mount Vernon, and Mrs. Thomas MacDonald of Dobbs Ferry, load bags of lollipops into their cars and drive to a twostory frame house converted to a private school in this wealthy Westchester County community. Here, they teach basic rhythem and dance steps to children from kindergarten through high school age who are ineligible for public school because their intelligence quotient in tests showed below 50, which the public schools require for admission. The project grew from a Rockin 1955, when the group decided in 1955, when the group eetided to support some worthy cause. Jeanne Philips Walsh of Skaneateles, N.Y., suggested an agency which few of the Rockettes at the time had heard of—the National Association for Retarded Children. Now association members (some 200) help raise funds for the agency and have spread the dance project to schools in N.Y., Arlington. Mass., San Antonio, Los Angeles and Miami. And the three who hold classes here plan a similar program soon in Greenwich, Conn-
