Decatur Official To Costa Rica Tourney
Gerald Strickler, prominent Decatur auctioneer and real estate man, and one of Indiana’s outstanding high school basketball officials, will be one of four referees from this area who will officiate an eight-nation tourney in San Jose, Costa Rica. The other officials, all from Fort Wayne, are Don Hollman, Gib Imel and M. C. George. All are members of the Northeastetn Indiana officials association. The four officials, with a total of 64 years’ experience in refereeing basketball, will work the tournament without pay. However, all expenses will be paid by the People-to-People Sports Committee, Inc., and the United States’ state department. The group plans to leave Fort Wayne Feb. 2. The tourney is scheduled to run for 16 days, with teams from eight nations entered. Their assignment to Costa Rica has been approved by L. V. Phillips, commissioner of the IHSAA. Phillips made only two stipulations, that all contracts with schools for games during the period be canceled by mutual agreement, and that they must return by Feb. 20 in order to receive sectional tourney assignments. Strickler, who has had 23 years of officiating experience, and is the senior member of the quartet, stated: “It will be a tremendous experience and should create good will between the United States and » Central America.” Strickler, a native of Decatur and graduate of Decatur high school, where he starred in all sports, has worked 14 sectional tourneys, eight regional meets, five semi-state tourneys and twice has officiated in the state final tourney at Indianapolis. Baltimore Can Take Title In Game Saturday United Press International The Baltimore Colts snapped one-half of their California jinx last week. They plan to smash the other half Saturday at Los Angeles and gallop to their second straight Western Division title in the National Football League. The Colts- (8-3) never had won at San Francisco until they defeated the Forty-Niners last Saturday, 34-14. They’ve won only once in seven previous appearances at Los Angeles but are 10point choices to trample the Rams (2-9) this time. The game will be nationally televised (CBS). Baltimore leads the FortyNiners and Chicago Bears (each 7-4) by a game and needs a victory or tie in its regular season windup Saturday to qualify as host to the New York Giants in the championship game The Colts and Giants clashed in the 1958 title game at New York with Baltimore winning the league’s first overtime thriller, 23-17. Tony Canzoneri Is Found Dead In Hotel Room NEW YORK (UPD — Official identification must be made on a morgue slab today of the body of Tony Canzoneri, the ring immortal whose face was known to I millionsabut who was found dead and alone in his hotel room at dusk Thursday. In the Bellevue Morgue the exact cause of death also must be determined although comedian Joey Adams, former vaudeville partner of the three-time champion, declared with a half-sob: ”1 can tell you what caused his death He finally died of a broken heart.’’ Heart failure was believed to have brought death to the former world featherweight, lightweight and junior welterweight champion at 51. Dead About Two Days At the Hotel Bryant — in the room of the little man who had fought from the shoe-shine street corners of New Orleans to boxing’s hall of fame—medical examiner John Devlin from the coroner’s office said death apparently had resulted from natural causes hnd that the exact cause would be determined tody. Attendants at the hotel' said Tony had been dead “about two days” before Willie Lustig, a friend, and bellboy Frank Medici found him sprawled on his bed. “A “don’t disturb" sign on the door had prevented the hotel maids from going into the room. Ironically, it was “heart” that made the muffin - faced, blackhaired battler the scourage of four divisions during his 15-year career of 178 professional bouts. Had Biasing Courage He had remarkable skill and punch and ruggedness, but it was heart — blazing courage — that sent him swarming into every opponent he ever faced. And he faced the best bantamweights, featherweights, lightweights and welterweights of his era, from 1925 throdgh 1939. inclusive. “He’s got the heart,” said Pete Herman of New Orleans — then world bantamweight champion who later became blind. “He’s got the greatest heart I ever saw,” said Herman, and he sent the 14-year-old shoe shine boy to New York. Tony carried a note to Sammy Goldman, who became his manager and remained his pilot throughout Tony's career.

Big Ten Leaden In Joint Session CHICAGO (UPD — Big Ten faculty representatives and athletic directors huddled at a joint meeting today to review conference problems. Thursday, the two groups attended to a number of procedural matters, including eligibility, substitution, schedules and matters of policy. The faculty representatives granted another year of football eligibility to Northwestern quarterback Dick Thornton, who played one game and 10 seconds of a second game this season, then was sidelined with an injury. Thornton, regarded as one of the Big Ten’s star signal callers, thus now will have two more years of eligibility. The faculty representatives also suggested wiping off the previous stipulation that all athletes transfering after two years of junior college to a Big Ten school had to stay in residence at the Big Ten school for one additional year before being eligible for athletics. Junior college transferees now would be immediately eligible to compete in conference athletics, providing the faculty representatives’ action is approved by the individual Big Ten schools. Faculty representatives also redefined the rules setting i faculty control. The redefined rules read that it would be acceptable to have such faculty control whenever the authority is in an institutional agency composed entirely of faculty members or in which faculty members are in the majority. In other action? —The athletic directors endorsed a proposal by football coaches for reinstatement of the free substitution rule for the 1960 season. —Athletic directors voted to make a seven - conference game schedule for the 1965-1966 football season, the first time it will be more than six conference games. A sls pay raise to SIOO also was voted for basketball officials. Hockey Results National League Boston 6, Toronto 3.
