Education Needed In counting the first three precincts, in which originally 885 ballots for mayor had been counted, more than 142 more ballots have been disqualified because they could not be counted under the law. Voters must understand that there is only one legal mark that can be used—an X. c This X can have no spurs, no barbs, no other marks. No checks, or written words, can be counted under the law, which specifically prohibits other marks. The X should be small enough so that it does not touch the sides of the square or circle voted. If it goes outside of the lines of the square or circle, the ballot cannot be counted. If any voter ever makes a mistake on a ballot, he should immediately inform the election inspector that he has mutilated his ballot and request a new one. 55-The voter should not mark over his X in any way. If white space appears in the X, so that a series of lines, or a parallel line is formed, it cannot be counted. It is a shame that we keep young people between the ages of 18 and 21 from voting, when they pay taxes and serve in the armed forces, on the grounds that they “don’t know enough to vote,” and then discover that 15% of the voters can’t even make a legal X in a square or circle! The recount commission is doing a good job. the first precinct was a sort of “guinea pig,” used to establish rules for the rest of the precincts. Three precincts were counted the first day. Probably four or more can be counted today, and the commission may even finish up by Friday or Saturday morning. The court will be able to certify a winner based on” the recount. But the lawyers may take the case to the Indiana supreme court, arguing the various ballots. It used obe thpt an X was an X. But present law, made by the state legislature and by the courts, has established that there are legal X’s, and illegal X’s. An X isn’t an X if it is a series of lines, rather than just two lines crossing at any angle and any point. It is not an X if it has spurs or hooks on it, unless the voter was apparently infirm. Some voters even wrote the word “Yes” by each space. Some voted for two men for the same office, mutilating only that race. One started to make an X in one circle, then crossed over, and made an Xin the other circle. While he only had one line drawn in the first circle, still the ballot could not be counted—it had a distinguishing mark. Another drew a little picture in he circle he marked —and cancelled his whole vote. Voting is a precious heritage—it certainly should no be lost because we cannot mark an X on the ballot, should it?

Free Flight Ended By Giant Balloon CANAAN. Conn. <UPI) — The instrument laden pressure-sealed gondola of a giant unmanned balloon landed here Wednesday night, ending a 455-mile free flight from Akron, Ohio. The two-million-cubic-foot polyethylene balloon, which reached an altitude of 100,000 feet during the flight, landed in a back yard at Hyde Park, N. Y. The balloon was launched from
the Akron Municipal Airport by the Goodyear Aircraft Corp., Wednesday to photograph the earth's surface. It was equipped 1 with an externally mounted aerial l camera, a radar-indicator camera • and other instruments. 1 Electrical Outlets It isn’t at all smart to string ■ long electric cords around rooms 1 in order to connect lamps or appliances. Much power is wasted. It is much better to have the necessary number of additional electrical outlets installed.
