, ■— Front-Runner To Nomination Is Fall Guy By LYLE C. WILSON United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) — This year’s front-runner for next year's presidential nomination is a man who merits. your cvmpassifl.t sympathy. Almost anything can happen to a front-runner, and often does. He is the patsy, the fall guy, the com. mon enemy of all other runners. All of the other runners know that they can score only if the front-runner in their party ian be brought down, never mind how, just so he is brought down. Among the Democrats, Massachusetts' Sen. John F. Kennedy probably best understands the foregoing facts. And, aihong the Democrats, the young senator has constant and urgent cause to wish these facts were not so. Among the Republicans, of course. Vice President Richard M. Nixon is the man out in front and, therefore, the man who must be brought down before any other Republican can take seriously his own chances to be nominated for president. All Fair In Politics Ground ruels such as these make the great game of politics a mean and bruising contest. All’s fair, as the man said, in love and war. All’s fair in politics, also, and the time is pproaching when the sweetness and light may be expected to diminish and the backstabbing to begin among the politicos. The coy and cautious politicians, who right now are campaigning from here to yonder for their party nominations still avoid any open declaration of their candidacies- There is a reason for that. Such a declaration simply would doubly alert all other aspirants speedily to get about the business of knocking off the declaree. So it is that the full weight of political misfortune implicit in the current public discusson of artfcial birth control fell heavily on the head of front-runner Kennedy. There are other Catholics among the numerous Democrats who are playing with the idea of being president of the United States. But it was to Kennedy that the newsmen hurried for a statement when the bishops of his church spoke up again against birth control. Poll Could Change The advantage of being frontrunner, of course, is that the prize can be won if the pace can be maintained. Nixon, equally with Kennedy, is aware of that. What troubles some of the vice president’s most ardent supporters right now is that the polls will boomerang. That would be deadly to Nixon’s political future. The polls in recent weeks have squashed the Nixon-can’t-win argument. But will the argument stay squashedW? That is the question. Events at home and abroad contributed to Nixon’s bulge in the popular opinion pols. Events at home and abroad lequaly could cut him down and, of course, the events could be of a kind over which the vice president would have no control whatever. He will have no control, for example, over the annual budget message which Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller will send next month to the New York Legislature. If Rockefeller reports a state treasury surplus and can propose a tax cut, the ensuing polls undoubtedly would reflect considerable favorable reaction, favorable to Rockefeller, that is, and unfavorable for Nixon.
