The phrase ‘dual personality” isn’t just a psychiatric term these days—it can also be applied to a storage wall which is the newest idea in room division. One side of this unit is designed to face the living room, and the other side is planned for the dining area. It provides separation with decoration, and also helps to define traffic patterns throjugh the house. Double Facilities The living side of the unit has a drop-leaf desk with several small sliding files and space for TV, books, hi-fi equipment and records. There are also several open sections for displaying pottery, vases, or art objects which can be enjoyed from both sides. Handyman's Pail The home handyman would do well to keep at least one galvanized steel pail in his workshop. Nails, screws, small parts and tools can be kept near at hand while the handyman moves through his home on a fixing tour if the items are carried in a pail. For neatness as wel as convenience, it is equally handy to mix cement, putty and paint in a pali rather than in the original containers of these materials. And when it comes time to fix a I leaky pipe, the amateur plumber is well advised to have a pail nearby—perhaps a very large one. o — o Household Scrapbook | By ROBERTA LEE | O .■ ■ ■. ■ ■■o £> Smoking Fireplace If your wood-burning fireplace throws out some smoke when the fire is first lit, roll a sheet of newspaper loosely. Ignite one end of this and hold it up the . chimney. The resulting heat should be enough to get cold air in the chimney moving and thus start your draft. Road Film on Car Rpad film and grease can pe removed from the surface of the automobile by rubbing with a rag or sponge moistened with gasoline. Then wash with an automobile soap and water, and after allowing to dry, polish the surface. Bathroom Fixtures After cleaning your bathroom fixtures with a cleaning cloth or sponge, go over the chrome faucets and porcelain with some facial tissues. • The paper takes up all lint and leaves the surfaces shining, with no water spots or rings. Cracked Plaster When plastering cracks in plastered walls, add some of the color of the finished wall to your plaster, so that it will not show through when the wall is finally painted. Mix a little of the paint with the ready-mixed or tube filler. If you are going to use a dry filler, add the paint to it before you add the water, since it will take less water than if left uncolored. Clothes Markers The kind of mending tape which is applied with a hot iron can be cut into the shape of initials for identifying your children’s clothes. The letters can be traced on the tape from magazines or newspapers, using carbon paper, and then cut out. The Kitchen Floor Instead of using a broom for the after-meal sweeping required in most kitchens, use a dry mop. The crumbs, dust and lint cling to the mop as though it were a magnet.

4* I I PH i I This under-basin storage unit holds variety of items which won’t fit into crowded medicine chest. It requires minimum amount of fir plywood and woodworking knowledge.
Need More Bathroom Storage? Look Under The Lavatory
That bathroom storage space you have been looking for may be “hiding" underneath the basin. A floorlength cabinet below the basin can convert a previously wasted space into six square feet of new storage area. Building this fir plywood cabinet will take the pressure off your overcrowded medicine chest. It provides new space for towels, shampoos, and the large assortment of boxes and bottles which clutter the bathroom. If you already have a built-in cabinet under the bathroom sink, you might build this unit under the basin in your utility room or “half bath.” Dimensions Vary The exact dimensions of the cabinet will depend on the size of your IVwiz Q. How much window area should I allow for in planning my kitchen? A. Some sources specify a minimum window area equivalent to 10 per cent of the floor area. The Small Homes Council of the University of Illinois, however, thinks more daylighting is desirable. It recommends that wherever possible the window area be increased to at least 15 to 20 per cent. Q. My kitchen is too big for mj> needs. Have you any remodeling suggestions? A. For efficiency’s sake, you might consider adding an island or peninsula of base wood cabinets to contain the sink or range—or both. This will reduce the distance between the major work centers. The extra space can be used for dining or storage facilities. Q. Can the “knocked-down” type of wood kitchen cabinet be assembled and installed by the average home craftsman? A. Cabinets of this type come semi-assembled and any person who is experienced in working with wood should have no difficulty with the job, provided walls and floors are straight and level. If the room’s construction is not true, or if major structural changes are involved, it’s advisable to have expert help. J. 1 k
