Report Cosily Fire Loss At Evansville EVANSVILLE, Ind. <UPD — A three-alarm fire in the heart of the city’s busiest district, fed by exploding drums and cans, destroyed a paint company early today and damaged several adjacent buildings. No injuries were reported, but early estimates of firemen said the total damage may run as high as half a million dollars. About 180 firemen and 13 vehicles, including 9 pumpers, were rushed to the blaze on Main St. when the Red Spot Paint & Varnish Co. building was enveloped by flames. Firemen said the force of the explosions blew part of the building across the street. Walls and the roof crumbled as flames shot skyward. The fire was brought under control before dawn but several units remained on standby duty through mid - morning, dousing streams of water on the smouldering ruins_ The $500,000 loss included considerable damage at the Rowe Import Shop next door to the paint firm. Smoke and water caused part of the damage, and the roof caved in when bricks from the crumbling Red Spot structure fell on it.
