Racks of various sizes will store spices, glasses, cleaning supplies or cans. Deep, detor- ' mounted swing-out units put unreachable space to work.: Other doors are fitted to hang pots and utensils. Several different devices for efficient storage of cook pans and lids have been developed. There are pull-out racks with a series of hooks for hanging pans, and a narrow base cabinet with a sliding vertical divided in the center that ; hangs pots and pans on either side. There are deep drawers with file dividers to keep lids and shallow baking tins in an upright position. Engineered for Service Narrow cabients with pull-out towel rods are available from many sources. Some have electric heaters and fans for fast drying Innovations also include pull-out waste-container units that are concealed when not in use. Standard, factory-built wood cabinet units also include engineered storages for brooms and other equipment. Some are equipped with adjustable shelves, hooks and racks. Others have shallow shelves tailored to the dimensions of most-used cleaning supplies. Other special-purpose units include cabinets that house a sew-ing-machine or a complete bar. There also are dinette tables that drop down from wall cabinets or pull out of base units. OIL RENEWS BLOCK A shabby chopping block can be renewed with a few drops of olive oil or cooking oil. Rub the block briskly with a clean, soft cloth. Wood Window Seal Insures Top Quality Prospective home buyers or families planning to build or remodel should look for the Seal of Approval of the American Wood Window Institute on all wood windows. f This certifies that the window meets the rigid requirements of the U.S. Bureau of Commerce in its commercial standards. The Federal Housing Administration requires that all wood windows in homes with FHAinsured’fnortgages meet these commercial standards.

Records Gone Astray? Try This Simple Music Bench
I In most homes, you can find the teenagers by following the sound of music to the nearest record player. Spinning the "platters” is always popular, and the youngsters deserve an exclusive area for their phonograph and record collection. This area can be one small corner and a simple "music bench.” The bench provides a base for both the record player and the listener, and has storage areas for 45s and full-sized records. The project is so simple to build that the music fans can put it together Between record sessions. The bench is a rectangular piece of fir plywood, supported by pipe legs and a record storage box. The box has a deep drawer with three wooden dowels for 45 rptn. records. Larger I.Ps can be stacked in the open area of the box beside the drawer. The entire unit is only 60 inches long and 16 inches wide. A strip of molding around the edge of the seat gives it a massive appearance. Simple butt joints are specified for construction of the bench and cabinet. If your music equipment is. Factory Wood Cabinets Feature Quality Control Factory-built wood kitchen cabinets are manufactured under rigid quality controls. Only select kilndried wood is used. Cabinets are assembled by skilled craftsmen. Finishes are pain-stakingly applied and only the finest, most durable types are used. CHECK GREEN LUMBER Prevent lumber shrinkage by checking for green lumber when delivered. Cut a sliver from the edge of the board. If it snaps cleanly when bent, it’s probably dry enough for use. Green wood slivers bend easily and leave ragged edges.

Plan Kitchen Around Three Work Areas The major aim of good kitchen planning is to provide efficient work centers around three major kitchen appliances—the refrigerator, the sink and the range. •rails objective was emphasized by Arthur C. Johns, widely known kitchen authority, at the 1959 training school for kitchen specialists, held in Chicago under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Wood Kitchen Cabinets. The important work centers, Mr. Johns pointed but, are those for food storage and mixing, which should be near the refrigerator; for food preparation and clean-up, at the sink; and for cooking and serving. handy to the range. Factory-built cabinets are available in such a complete range of sizes, and with such specialized features for every need, that any adequate space can be adapted to an efficient operation, the students were told. The storage-mixing center should be located close to the service entrance, since many foods go direct from grocery sack into the refrigerator. This area is used for mixing foods to be baked and for assembling salads and desserts. It is a good location for a cutting board and condiment racks. The sink center, used for all phases of meal preparation and final clean-up, should be located where the fewest number of steps are necessary to reach the other work areas. Except in large kitchens, cooking and serving are generally combined in one area. Base cabinets and work surfaces on one or both sides of the range are important here. Countertop materials should be resistant to hot pots and pans. The distance between each point should be as small as possible, while still allowing enough work surface and storage space for each enter. Ideally the distance from sink to refrigerator slightly greater, and range to refrigerator the long side of the “magic triangle.” Claim "Kitchen Os the Future’ Is Here Today “The kitchen of the future” is no longer a dream but an accomplished fact. That was the consensus of ten magazine editors who participated in a panel discussion at a recent training school for kitchen specialists, conducted in Chicago by the National Institute of Wood Kitchen Cabinets. It was agreed that today's well planned, well equipped kitchen has attained such a high degree of efficiency and attractiveness that no significant changes can. be expected in the next decade. Current trends toward greater popularity of factory-built wood cabinets and increased use of builtin appliances will gain momentum in the years ahead, the editors said. One editor predicted that continued wide acceptance of the op-en-planned kitchen will lead to appliances styled to look more like cabinets. The editors offered some interesting observations about the housewife and her kitchen: “Modern kitchens do not spoil homemakers, but they frighten some. This is due to lack of training in the use of automatic appliances.” “The woman buyers knows what she wants in her kitchen but hesitates to make decisions herself. She worries that her family and friends will not agree with her selection. Therefore, she prefers to work with an expert.”
