Just turned 21, the eldest daughter of ex-King Farouk teaches at the exclusive school from which she vas graduated a few months rp» Season Os Advent Will Begin Sunday By LOUIS CASSELS United Press International Churches will begin Sunday to proclaim a fact that department stores have been advertising for several weeks. Christmas is coming. Sunday marks the beginning of Advent, the four-week season of the ancient church calendar in which Christians are supposed to prepare spiritually for the feast of the Nativity on Dec. 25 Advent used to be a time of prayer and penance, much like lent. The idea was that people needed to reflect for a while on their need for a Savior in order to appreciate the “glad tidings of great joy” that are perennially heralded to mankind on the birthday of Christ. Receives Little Emphasis Today the penitential aspects of Advent are little emphasized. The season' has become a lait-ditch rally ground for the churches’ effort to maintain Some semblance of religious meaning in America’s heavily commercializzed Christmas observance. This Sunday and throughout Advent, churches will be telling their members that it's simply not possible to “keep Christ in Christmas” with a few last-minute gestures like reading the 2nd chapter of St. Luke’s Gospel to the children on Christmas Eve. Unless professing Christians start thinking about Christ and the awesome significance which they attach to his birth as early as they start planning menus and gift lists, the churches will say, the religious aspects of the holliday will remain a sort of embarrassing appendage. Many Offer Suggestions Many denominations will offer their members specific suggestions on how the Advent season can be made a time of spiritual preparation for Christmas. In addition to the obvious prescription ot regular attendance at church servicts, the typical pogram provides for informal family worship activities, built around ancient symbols like the Advent wreath and the Creche. Some clergymen are frankly pessimistic about the possibility of rescuing Christmas from paganization, even with a wide observance of Advent. Methodist Bishop Gerald Kennedy of Los Angeles, for example, has wondered out loud whether it might “be better to let the world have Christmas, and choose another day to remember the birth of Jesus Christ.” Garbage Pail Pour some melted paraffin into your kitchen garbage pail and allow it to spread evenly over the bottom. This will keep the contents from sticking, and your pail will be much easier to clean.
