CREAMED COMMENTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON, STANDING BY A NEW CONVERT, Acts 9:10-30, 26-29, for Sunday, December 6. After his experience on the Damascus road, Saul needed to regain not only his physical sight but also spiritual guidance. This lesson demonstrates how he received such spiritual assistance. The role performed by Ananias and Barnabas should be of help to us today in discovering new ways in which we can help others become effective in the Christian fellowship. V.lO. “And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. An he said. Behold, I am here, Lord.” The name “Ananias” was a common one and meant, "One to whom Jehovah had been gracious.” We know he was a devout man, obscure, unpretentious, but a man who could

be used of God and was willing to respond to any call for service. V 5.11.12. "And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for behold, he prayeth,. .. And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receve his sight.” Saul was staying at the house of Judas in Damascus. God gave to Saul a vision of Ananias* coming to him and now God informs Ananias of his role. V 5.13,14. “Then Ananias answered. Lord, I have heard by many of this man. how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem :. .. And here he bath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.” It is understandable why Ananias was reluctant to meet Saul since he had heard of his active persecutions of Christians in Jerusalem and his plan to arrest the Christians in Damascus.
Vp.15,16. “But the Lord said unto’ him. Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: ... for I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.” God's choices are not to be questioned. One's past does not matter so much as the fact of one’ conversion to the Christian way of life. When God chooses a man for a certain purpose, he sees to it that he is fit for the task. V 5.17,18. “And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house, and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou earnest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost... And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.” Ananias not only did as he was commissioned by God, but went farther and called Saul “brother” as a symbol of their common faith. By laying his hands on Saul, he not only received his sight, but the Holy Spirit as well. Vs. 19,20. “And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with tjie disciples which were at Damascus. .. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Sen of God.” Saul ended his three-day fast and sought the companionship of the diseiples in Damascus. To become a Christian in early days involved baptism and often the laying on of hands. No period of probation or formal instruction was necessary. That Saul should immediately start to proclaim that Jesus was the Messiah must have amazed the Jews who had known him to be such a formidable enemy of the Christians so recently. V. 26. “And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.” Three years had passed during which Saul had retired to Arabia, then returned to Damascus, and on to Jerusalem where he hoped to have fellowshin with the disciples there. This is one of two ordinanaces which we believe the New Testament requires Christians to observe. Baptism is the act of obedience which symbolizes the dramatic change which comes to anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as his Saviour. It marks the washing away of an old life—the freshness of a new start. Naturally, it has a historical beginning. Jesus himself was baptized in this way in the River Jordan. As we are baptized, who show our willingness to follow Him. Immersion alone, of course, does not make anybody a Christian—that comes from a sincere decision to accept and follow Jesus. Baptism signifies that this has beer done. There is a lift to the spirit in this historical ceremony, so that it is an important part of becoming a Chrisitan. The door to every Christian Church is open to you. Next week: “What is the Lord's Supper?”
