Insulation Sure Cure For Shivers Doctors agree that among the worst culprits responsible for family colds and related illnesses* are chilling drafts inside the home. It’s a scientific fact that unhealthy drafts can occur in a house even when all doors and windows are closed. Here's how this can work: Walls with little or no insulation stay cold in winter, even in a heated room. The heated air is chilled when it touches the cold walls and falls rapidly to the floor, scudding across the room in a chilling, unhealthy draft. This is particularly undesirable when children play on the floor. • The best remedy for cold walls is thick insulation. At least 3 inches of mineral wool insulation keeps wall surfaces at rqom temperature, eliminating these drafts. Walls of existing homes can be insulated by a mineral wool contractor who fills the spaces between the studs by forcing insulation in the walls under air pressure. He does this work from outside the house. Ceilings require at least 4 inches of insulation. Ceilings can be insulated with mineral wool batts, blankets or pouring wool by the home owner when joists are exposed in the attic. Chilling drafts also can get in through cracks around windows, doors, and foundation. These should be caulked. Make sure doors and windows have snug weatherstripping and close tightly. Proper insulation provides a further benefit in summer by helping to keep heat out and mating the house more comfortable. New Design for Modem Living Wears Look of Colonial Beauty
Well-designed space for the demands of modern living plus the beauty of traditional styling have been combined in this new home plan by Architect Herman H. York. . Along with traditional materials, such as wood windows and panel doors, the architect has included in this house some advantages of the traditional style that have been sacrificed in many so-called modern houses. Among them are the inviting covered porch, 3-level pitched roof, and the practicality of a 2-story house, Shutters Widen Windows , The beauty of the front entrance is emphasized by a stock Dutch-door of ponderosa pine with columns on both sides of the opening. Louvers shutters make the double-hung wood windows seem wider and are designed to harmonize with the deep color of the asphalt shingle roof. Besides providing color and traditional beauty, the asphalt shingles in a deep shade on the roof help to lower the exterior appearance of the house. . A 20-by-12 foot recreation room and wide foyer add to the spacious interior. Insulation Insures Comfort Architect York says a major attraction of the traditional design is good zoning. Living, dining, and meal preparation areas are separated and all bedrooms are on the second floor. For year-round comfort, the architect specifies thick mineral wool insulation —at least 4 inches in ceilings and a minimum of 3 inches in walls. If the
Pine Panel Doors Provide Authentic Colonial Styling
Authenticity in designing and building today’s popular Colo-nial-style homes demands the use of materials that add to the i atmosphere of warmth and dig- > nity of the traditional home. One way conscientious archi- ; tects and builders achieve this authenticity is with panel doors. Made of ponderosa pine, these doors are true copies of Colo-nial-style panel doors handmade by early American craftsmen. Ideally, an architect first selects a panel door and front entranceway from one of many traditional styles available in ponderosa pine. From this deI sign he selects a. similar style ; of panel door to be used on rooms and closets throughout the house and for all other entrances. This provides not only an important .continuity all through

Pitched Roof Only Escape From Clam-Loving Gulls
ISLAND PARK, N. Y.—Long Island’s dive-bombing sea gulls don’t know it yet, but it looks like they’ve lost the battle of the flat roof in this oceanside community. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Martin are considering having a new pitched roof erected over their contemporary flat-roofed home to foil the hordes of gulls that have been bombarding the house with fresh clams day and night for nearly a year. The new pitched roof would solve the problem because the falling clams will glance harmlessly off to the ground. The Martins’ troubles are the result of the fact that their house is the only one with a flat roof in the entire 500-house community. The flat, hard roof was an ideal surface for the clamdropping because the impact cracked open the shell, exposing the succulent meat to the hungry gulls. For months the clatter of clams and the clamor of the excited gulls kept the Martins awake at night and on edge during the day. Even their German shepherd pup, Max, suffered. When he barked at the airborne invaders, thev disdainfully shelled him with clams, driving him yelping for cover. Besides getting rid of the gulls, the Martins would enjoy these other benefits of their new pitched roof: 1. More living space. Mrs. Martin would use the new space for a study for her husband. 2. More ventilation. An air
New Double-Hung Windows Feature Insulating Glass _
Hlnp**' If . JUrdi I' By" Double-hung wood windows with insulating glass keep child’s room warmer on cold days, stop costly heat loss.
Remember when Grandma cooled her wonderful apple pies on the sill of the double-hung window? Well, both apple pie and double-hung windows are still top favorites today. Oldfashioned apple pie, of course, could never be improved, but manufacturers have been making consistently better doublehung wood windows for years. The latest improvement is insulating glass. Insulating glass for doublehung windows is possible today because of the development of a process that employs two layers of class that is thinner and lighter than the glass used in previous methods. A dead air space between the panes provides insulation. This means that in todays double-hung wood window a home owner gets two advantages: _ Comfort and economy provided by insulating glass plus the natural insulating qualities of wood sash and frame. Like the inner pane of the
Walnal Remaint Favored Wood Os Leading Stylists What fine cabinet wood will be most widely seen in furniture store displays this fall and winter? The answer, according to surveys made at the principal furniture markets, is American walnut. A check kt the summer International Home Furnishings market in Chicago, for example showed that 35 per cent of all bedroom and dining room suites exhibited were iri walnut. That was about twice the total recorded for the next most widely shown wood. In maintaining its lead position among woods, walnut is continuing a trend which has prevailed since the mid-1950’5. The walnut preference is most evident in quality lines and pieces styled by name designers. Walnut, however, also is popular in medium and moderately priced selections. One reason for the' continued dominance of walnut, according to leading stylists, is the current emphasis on natural wood beauty as a major design element. Walnut is noted for its outstanding Jjeauty of grain and figure and for the wide variety of figure types in which it is available. Oak Laid Economically Over Concrete Slabs Homes built on concrete slabs laid directly over the ground now can be equipped economically with genuine oak floors. Oak in the strip style is nailed to screeds imbedded in mastic on the concrete. Block oak floors are laid in mastic without screeds.
