Question Two Men In Girl's Death INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — Sheriff s officers planned a new round of questioning today for two men held on preliminary charges of manslaughter in connection with the death of Lydia Edna Fowler, 17, New Whiteland. Gene Rich, 19, and Verdon E. Stewart, 26, Indianapolis, were questioned Saturday and Sunday as authorities sought to learn of their whereabouts and activities on Oct. 8, the night the girl last was seen. Lydia's battered body was found under a bridge in southwestern Marion County Nov. 10. Examiners said the girl had been dead about a month. They believed she was struck and killed by a car. Rich and Stewart were arrested on a tip given police after a $1,200 reward was offered for information in the mysterious death. Tests were made on Rich’s car which was towed from a no-park-ing zone by police Oct. 16 but never claimed by its owner- The car had a broken right headlight rim and evidence of fender and body damage. Stewart’s car was found in Kentucky where, authorities said, he had traded it two days after Miss Fowler disappeared. State Police Sgt. Ray Thompson and sheriff’s investigator Delmar Tabelman went to Horse Creek, Ky.. to check on the car. They reported they found blood on the front bumper, damage to a fender and a crack in the windshield, all on the right side. i Rich and Stewart were scheduled to appear in Speedway Magistrate Court tonight on the preliminary charges. Arraigned On Charges Os Fraudulent Checks Mrs. Sarah F. Philpott, of Decatur, was arraigned in Adams circuit court this morning with Judge Myles F. Parrish issuing the rights and privileges of the accused. No plea was entered as the defendant requested time to digest the information. Mrs. Philpott is under SSOO bond on each of four charges for issuing fraudulent checks. She is being held in custody of the sheriff until she posts bond, or stands trial. Mrs. Phijpatt was arrested by sheriff Merle Affolder Saturday evening amt she was jailed at that time. Prosecutor Severin H. Schurger prepared the affidavits, charging her with passing the checks.
