Q—ls it up to my doctor to decide whether or not I’m disabled under social security? A—No. On the medical report from which your doctor, hospital, institution or agency fills out for you, they are asked to give the medical history of your condition: what the doctors have found to be wrong with you, how severe it is, what medical tests have shown, and what treatments you have recived. They are not asked to decide whether or not you are “disabled” under the social security law. A determination is made later when all medical and other records are considered. 3. are over 65 years old, you may still get some monthly payments if you do not earn more than $2,080. Right? A—Right. If you are eligible for benefits in all months of the year, the rule of thumb is this: You may get some of your benefits if your yearly earnings are not more than $2,080. If you are 65 or over, protect your rights by visiting your social security office. 4. Q— l heard that there is a booklet in circulation that explains in detail about how the work you do after you start getting social security benefits will affect your rights to receive payments. How can I get a copy of this booklet? A—Write your social security office for a free copy of this booklet. It is entitled, "Benefit Payments.” Ask for it by name. 5. Q —l read that you can get social security benefits when you are 72 years old no matter how much you are earning. Well, I’m 73 and have worked under social security since 1937, and I haven’t received that first monthly benefit check yet. Why? A—You must apply for your monthly benefits before you can start to receive them. You may be paid back as far as 12 months only. So don’t wait too long because you might lose some benefits. Visit your social security office. 1 ' 6. Q—l just hired a housekeeper and expect to pay her S4O a week cash wages. How do I report her

for social security? I have never made a report before. A—The form used to report household employes may be secured from any Internal Revenue office. A—You may be paid social security benefits while you are between 50 and 65 years of age.

y Household Scrapbook I By ROBERTA LEE I O —£ — O Faucet Repair You can effect a good temporary repair on a leaky faucet by use of a piece of wrapping twine. Take a piece of sturdy twine and wrap it around the pipe where the washer ordinarily belongs. If pulled tight, it really works. Sealed Bottles When carrying a bottle in traveling and you wish to make it leakproof, fit the cork tightly into it, then dip into melted paraffin. Tie a piece of heavy paper over the top to make it even more secure. Machine Grease If clothing is spotted with machine grease, add a little ammonia and soap to cold water and apply it to the fabric. Ammonia in which salt has been dissolved will also remove grease spots. Cleaner Books Moist wallpaper cleaner will freshen the texture of book bindings. Paper, cloth, or leather bindings can be rubbed with this cleaner, which will also whiten the edges of the pages.

NOTES FROM ■ AFTER THIRTY By JACK HELLER I ALONG FOR THE RIDE Ray Fager went on a quail hunt this past week. At least that’s what: he planned on. Ray and some other fellows were going to hunt quail, on the farm of a friend In Ohio. Quail hunting in Ohio should be very good, because for years the birds have been “off limits” to hunters, as they are considered song birds in the Buckeye state. After driving clear to the Cincinnati area, the men were getting quite anxious. On their arrival they

got quite a shock. Ohio had opened the quail season, but only on state-owned land. The farm of their friend was still off limits. Ray said he had one consolation—they got a real good dinner at the farm. LOCAL BOY Word has been received this week of some wonderful success of Bob Stapleton, formerly of Decatur and now working in Clinton, lowa. Bob has had several good jobs, and currently is managing director of the Clinton Development Co. In this capacity, he has engineered a project known in Clinton as Manufacturing Mea-: dows, which is a “housing develop-| ment” for industries. Newest of the : six recent additions to Clinton’s industries through the efforts of

Stapleton is a 55,000 square foot i plant to be constructed by Inland 1 Homes. It's about time to bring i Bob back home, and put him to work on Decatur. < SO WHAT? , Most forest camp kitchens use bottled gas for their stoves. Labor costs prohibit the use of wood. MEMORIES About eight years ago, when the motion picture Industry staged “movietime caravans” throughout 1 the country, a group of Hollywood personalities came to Decatur and put on a show on Court street. Included in the group were two young starlets just getting their start, Mary Castle, a beautiful redhead, and Ann Bancroft, an attractive brunette. In the papers last i week was the story of Miss Castle,

who was jailed for public intoxication. A few bit parts in movies and an unfortunate outcome to a marriage are about all she has accomplished since her visit to Decatur. Miss Bancroft was also in the papers. After a number of successful roles in the movies, she had attained greater fame on Broadway this season in the “Miracle Worker,” the story of Helen Keller. It would appear that knowing how to handle fame is an important as achieving It, PIDGIN SPANISH Roy Kalver tells of an interesting conversation he heard in Cuba j last year. Really, the conversation I itself wasn’t so interesting, but the conversationalists sound like quite a pair. One was a Jewish man who had lived all his life in the south

until going to Cuba. The other was his partner, an Irishman. They were talking to each other, Practicing their Spanish. That presents quite a picture. A southern Jew and an Irishman talking in Spanish—lll bet the natives got a kick out of the accents. JUST WHAT IS NEEDED Since this day and age presents an underorganized society, a teacher at the local high school has come up with a new society to belong to. After much hair-pulling over the English used by many students and even some of the faculty members, the teacher organized “The Society For The Prevention Os The Use Os At To End Sentences With." This is all well and good, but it is also understood that a phrase should not be ended with a prepostition (see first sentence), and where does he think the word "with” in his society title is at? A THANKSGIVING THOUGHT The following quotation Is from the book of Deuteronomy, the eighth chapter, verses 12-14, and 17. (RSV) “Lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks multiply, and your silver and gold is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. .. Beware lest you say in your heart, 'My power and the, might of my hand have gotten me ' this wealth’.” > 0
