Wednesday, No- ! vember 4, DCHS Commodore ■ night was held ■in the schoql 'gym. Parefits 1 and students became acquainted with the school athletic department and were
given a preview of the basketball season in all sections. The cheerleaders and band were introduced. The grade school Saturday League, the junior high team, and the varsity gave short demonstrations of their playing ability. Father Schmitt and Father Jaeger welcomed the guests and indicated what could be expected of our boys this year. Coach Lindahl described new plays and had the varsity team demonstrate them. —D.C.H.S.— Friday, Nov. 6, was the DCHS Commodore Victory night- Our varsity team triumphed over Monroeville with a score of 64 to 53. •

Don Baker was the top scorer for the Commodores. The Pep club and cheerleaders backed our boys to victory. That same afternoon a pre-game session was held in the school gym. After practicing cheers for the coming game our coach, Mr. Lindhal, reminded us that not only the basketball teams are on exhibition during the game, but the whole student body represented by those watching the gaihes. The team will next meet Woodlawn here on November 20. —D.C.H.S.— Sunday evening, November 9, a bonfire in Schultz’s woods was sponsored by the cheerleaders. The bonfire was under way by 7 p.m. and everyone was on hand to celebrate Friday night's victory and to enjoy the cider, popcorn, and potato chips that were served. Father Robert Jaeger and Mr. and Mrs. Al Lindahl chaperoned the party. —D.C.H.S.— Pins are flying as the bowling ball rolls down the alley. New re-< cords are made as the DCHS teams compete against each other. The project is going smoothly and the boys are developing into good bowlers. —D.C.H.S.— November 6, Paul Hess, a senior at DCHS won a safe drivers award of $5. Jim Borders, representing the Chicago Motor Club, presented the award to Paul on the DHS parking lot. Congratulations, Paul, for displaying your skill as a care-

ful driver. R' —D.C.H.S.— The publishers of the DC HiLight are at it again—seeking out newsy items and following up leads. Our coming issue will be published at the end of the month. —D.C.H.S.— As the snow flakes swirl to the ground, Mr. Halikowski, our school Janitor, stokes up the furnace and all is cozy when the school day begins. We students would like to thank Mr. Halikowski for having the building so warm and comfortable on these wintry mornings. —D.C.H.S.— Bonnie Hake, Carol Rumschlag, and Sarah Gass sold the most Christmas cards this year. Prizes will be awarded to the girls. The seniors seem to . think it was a pretty successful drive. —D.C.H.S.— November 10, a parents night Was held in the school auditorium. Ulis meeting was held in observance of national catholic education < week. Tuesday night was also open house at Decatur Catholic. The parents received their children’s report cards at that time. —D.C.H.S.— Last Wednesday, November 11, the halls of DC were quiet. bers. Eleanor Miller played , Grieg's “Concerto in A Minor” and Mike Kaehr played “Prayer from Finlandia" on the organ. Jack ( Dailey had a solo on his trumpet ( in one of the band selections. A double trio of girls. consisting of Janet Miller, Eleanor Miller. ( Suette Johnson, and Kay Wynn ] Joyce Helm, Barbara Harden, , sang Franz Schubert's “Holy is | the Lord.” Everyone enjoyed the ; program very much. —D.H.S — Thursday, Mr. Dorwin attended an Indiana high school-junior division conference at Indiana Unievr- j sity. He talked with the nine fresh- f men students of D.H.S. attending t j the university. The students are 1 as follows: Bill Bond, Jim Bleeke, i Phil Rambo, Connie Baxter, Mike 1 Beery, Cheryl Ashbaucher, »Eva ' Plumley, Carolyn Taylor, and Ann ‘ Kocher. -D.H.S.— A large group of juniors and seniors attended the guidance conference at Indiana Technical College, Saturday. The group found the conferences to be both interesting and beneficial. —D.H.S.— The student council recently elected the following officers: president, Jack Dailey; vice president, John Cowan: secretary, Taya Erekson. Congratulations, Jack, John and Taya! —D.H.S.— Thursday evening, four girls, members of the junior-senior choir, will usher for the Civic Music concert at the Youth and Community Center. The girls to usher are Becky Maddox, Barb Burk, Jan Aumann, and Alice Allwein. —D.H.S.— The trophy case in the hall is now being used as a display cabinet by the art. shop, home economics, and biology classes, All of the students enjoy looking at the displays between classes. —D.H.S.— Friday afternoon everyone enjoyed the program of the mixed quartet, the Vocal Aires. The next assembly will be the Thanksgiving assembly to be held November 24. The Rev. Stuart Brightwell will speak to the student body. -D.H.S.— Thursday and Friday of next week will be Thanksgiving vacation days for the faculty and students of D.H.S. —D.H.S.— Adult season tickets may now be purchased in the principal's office from Mrs. Doty. New ticket holders should make reservations as soon as possible. Also student tickets are now on sale. —D.H.S.— The local merchants and indus tries participating in the “Student Day Sale” make a total of one hundred and thirty. are beginning to memorize them. i Class recitations will begin Friday; then, Mr. Dorwin will select three girls and three boys to enter the contest to be held December 10. —D.H.S.— A pep session was held Tuesday afternoon during the activity period. The cheerleaders went through some new yells and Mr. Bevelhimer spoke to the cheering bloc. The students and Jackets are all “hepped up" to beat Adams Central Friday night and make the first basketball game of the season a victory. Good luck, Jackets! —D.H.S.— Wednesday night the Jackets travel to Concordia for their second game. Beat those Cadets! —D.H.S.— The basketball open house, Tuesday evening was enjoyed by a large crowd. Friday the thir-| teenth didn't! prove to be * too | unlucky for Hoagland. That] night the Wildcats played and won their first ACAC ball game of the 1959 -60 season. Monroe-
ville, our opponent, put up a great fight against us. We trailed at the half-time by one point, but then pulled away and led the rest of the way to a 62-54 victory. Jack Braun led the Wildcats with 22 points while Bob Sallfrank added 19. —H.H.S.— The following night Hoagland downed Adams Central, 68-62, in their first home game of the season. Again it was “a thriller.” We led all the way. but Adams Central tied the score once in the last quarter. Bob Saalfrank paced our attack with 18 points. Dan Perry and Dave Bradtmueller each collected 16 and Jack Braun cashed in 12. We were all happy to see Stan Behrman, who was previously sidelined because of injuries, play a part of each game. He put up a great fight and deserves a big pat on the back. —H.H.S.— Monday, November 16, the photographer was at .school .to take the pictures for our yearbook. Since all the organizations were photographed at different times, most of our classed were disrupted. Many of us wished school would be like that all the time. Sally Hobbs, Joy King, Mary Hockemeyer, Joan David, and Bob Salfrank, under the leadership of Mr. Rothhaar, were responsible for getting all the organizations in position. They did all did a wonderful job. —H.H.S.— Since the Hoagland high dance band was an organization which had its picture taken Monday, Bob Dietrich, who is the guitar player, brought his guitar to school and played and sang for us during our lunch hour. Everyone thought he was just great and hope to have him do it for us again. —H.H.S.— The majorettes showed off their new uniforms for the second time Saturday night at the ball game. The majorettes chosen for this year are: Marilyn Hockemeyer, Marna Metheny, Sally Hobbs, Ruthie Scheumann, Patty Sommers, Christine Counterman, Norreen Mattingly, and Bev Scheumann, with Judy Bauer and Bonnie

We have proof that bad luck comes in three’s. The Eagles’ losses to Ossian Friday night and to Petrol eu m , Saturday night make the second and third of the season. Let’s
hope the next three games will all be recorded in the "victory column.” —M.H.S.— Despite the losses suffered by the team, the Pep club and other fans have done a fine job of encouraging the team with their cheering. —M.H.S.— The other set of reserve team cheerleaders, Marian Caston, Judy Conrad, and Gladys Meyers, also wore black sweaters, gold skirts and tops for their initial performance last Friday evening. Both groups look very “sharp" in their outfits. —M.H.S.— An unfortunate accident occurred at the Petroleum game. Dick Bulmahn suffered a sprained ankle. This injury may keep him out of action for some time. —M.H.S.— The sophomore girls received quite a thrill last week because of the arrival of their class sweaters. The boys, however, are still awaiting their jackets and hope that they will arrive soon. —M.H.S.— The FHA chapter met for their regular meeting Monday evening. The organization voted to sell ball ; point pens inscribed with an eagle and the name of the school. The remainder of the evening was spent in making cancer dressings. —M.H.S.— Monday evening the MHS junior i high and freshman teams battled i the Decatur teams in the Mon- . mouth gym. Both Monmouth teams were defeated, —M.H.S.— Tuesday . morning the second , chapel service of the school v year ; was held with Rev. Stuart Brighti well of the Baptist church of Decatur as speaker. Using three Biblical characters as examples, > he emphasized the fact that Stus' dents must have high ideals and s must never be quitters. —M.H.S.— Wednesday the Monmouth choir traveled to Geneva for a full day of practice with the choirs of the other Adams county schools. Today the members of the county band spent the day at Adams Central for practice. This evening the Adams county music festival will be held at Adams Central. The program will be presented by the county band and the combined choirs of the county schools. Tickets for the festival, beginning at 8 p.m., are: adults, 50 cents; children, 25 cents. [ — M.H.S.— Mr. Gerig, MHS music director, . has selected a girls’ sextet. This is . a new endeavor of the music department. The members of the sextet are: Winnie Rafert, Ann • Seaman, Dianne Exrleben, Janet . Shaffer. Lila Kruetzman, and Barbara Roe.
