Three Negro Youths Admit To Stabbings TUPELO, Miss. (UPD _ Three Negro youths, stirred by a Civil War motion picture they saw two weeks ago about anti - slavery guerrillas in Kansas, admitted stabbing three white persons in a two night reign of terror here. Charges against the youths for the unprovoked stabbings will be presented to the Lee County grand jury today. County Atty. Dudley R. Carr said the bos sighed statements admitting the stabbings. Arrested were Otto Jones Jr, 18, charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, T.L. Caruthers, 17, and J.B. .Little, ’6, charged as Jones said he “just didn’t like white people.”- The boys called themselves the “Jayhawkers." The boys said they saw a movie, “The Jayhawkers” about two weeks ago and decided to call their gang by that name. The movie was about anti - slavery guerrillas in Kansas durnig the Civil War. Carr said the three were natives of Tupelo but Jones had lived in Chicago since 1957 and had recently returnedOpposes Taxpayers Pay For Farmland INDIANAPOLIS 'UPI — It is not “logical, practical or even possible” to have the American taxpayer foot the bill for retirement of productive farmland the head of the Indiana Farmers Union said Tuesday. John Raber, IFU president, said “the farmers don’t want it and the taxpayers can’t afford it.” “It is hard for me to imagine the Farm Bureau presenting a program to increase the cost of our national food program $1,530,000,000 a year when the taxpayers are already carrying an annual eight billion dollar agricultural burden,” Raber said in a news release. Rabe said his. organization “concurs” with the Farm Bureau’s program to retire 60 million acres of farmland. “But to throw the burden of paying the farmers sl9 an acre onto the American taxpayer is not logical, practical or even possible,” he said. Raber said it is “ridiculous and unnecessary” that today's food prices., .at the retail level -are marked, $> at an average of" 170 per cent'. “This is a greater markup than on diamonds,” he said. “The adjustment to give the farmers a fair price should come from excessive profits and more efficient distribution, rather than increased govenment spending or increased retail prices,” Raber said

Air Force Captain •’ Is Killed In Crash TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (UPD— Air Force Capt. Donald F. Mowery, 33, son of Mrs. Helen Mowery of Terre Haute, was killed Monday night when his jet trainer plane crashed on a hillside near Dobbins Air Force Base at Marietta, Ga. Secret Meetings On Steel Settlement NEW YORK (UPD — Stepped up “secret” meetings between the steel union and management may produce a voluntary three-year contract with slightly sweeter terms than-the so-called final offer of industry, Iron Age Magazine said today. But the metalworking publication said that these recent meetings have not brought the two sides “close enough to cause a surge of optimism.” However, the heat is on both sides to come up with an agreement before the 80-day Taft-Hart-ley injunction runs out. Iron Age said. There is pressure on the industry to head off a second walkout and pressure on the union to avoid compulsory federal arbitration should the strike be resumed. The trade paper also said the union plans “a massive encirclement” of the steel industry by reaching separate contracts with the aluminum, copper and canmaking industries. The union’s strategy, according to Iron Age, is to isolate the steel industry as the last holdout in hopes of putting “irresistable” pressure on the steel industry for a settlement. Irish Ambassador To Send Son Home WASHINGTON (UPD — A student adviser at the college attended by David P. Hearne, son of the Irish ambassador, said today the youth’s father “knows best” in sending him back to Ireland. Asistant Dean Charles Van Way Jr., of American University, said he had scheduled a “talk” with 21-year-old David but called it off when Ambassador J ; ohn J Hearne announced that his son would be sent home in the near future to continue his education. Van Way, the university foreign student adviser, declined to say whether he had planned any disciplinary action. He said he thought it would be a good idea to talk with the student, who has been involved in several scrapes with police. Young Hearne’s car struck and killed a 54-year-old Negro woman last Wednesday on a Washington street. He claimed diplomatic immunity and authorities said it was useless to hold an inquest into the woman’s death. Van Way said that Hearne was considered on the campus as just one of the 500 foreign students. During a talk with the Irish youth. Van Way said, David seemed “respectful and quiet.” Young Hearne had only been enrolled in the university since September. Too short a period has passed to judge his record scholastically, Van Way said. “But I feel he’s a boy of basic worth,” said the dean sympathetically. lowa Truck Driver Killed In Accident ROLLING PRAIRIE, Ind.
