UCLA Winner Friday Night By 2112 Score By FRED DOWN United Press International The free-for-all battles for conference titles and bowl berths go into their next-to-last week of frantic action today with Syracuse, Texas and Clemson in the strongest positions to nail down bids. Only a loss to 36-point underdog Colgate — which would rank as the season’s No. 1 upset to date — can derail nationally-top ranked Syracuse while Texas and Clemson can clinch at least ties for the Southwestern and Atlantic Coast conference titles. The Southwest winner goes to the Cotton Bowl and the Atlantic Coast victor is a possibility for the Sugar or Orange. Second-ranked Texas is a sixpoint favorite, over Texas Christian in one of the Southwest’s annual “big ones’’ and Clemson, 5-0 in ACC competition, is 14 points over Maryland. The Big Ten and West Coast races are expected to continue deadlocked but there’s liable to be a big blowup in the Southeastern Conference. In the Big Ten Wisconsin is favored over Illinois and Northwestern is picked over Michigan State in results that would leave them tied for the league lead. Georgia, unbeaten in the Southeastern Conference, is an underdog to Auburn, however, which means that once - beaten Louisiana State, Mississippi and Georgia Tech can. enhance their title chances. UCLA Tops NCS LSU. beaten for the first time in 20 games last Saturday, i« figured to bounce back with a vengeance against Mississippi State in a night game; Mississippi is rated nine points over Tennessee, the team whch upset LSU and Georgia Tech is six points over Alabama. In Friday night action. Bill Kilmer, a jackof-all-<backfield)-trades passed for two touchdowns, while his understudy Skip Smith ran ■7O yards for another to give UCLA a 21-12 win over North Carolina State. In other Friday night action, Miami, Fla- defeated South Carolina 26-6; Gustavus topped Kearney 27-lg; Arkansas Tech wallopped Oachita 40-12; North East Missouri trounced Bradley 38-8 and -Missouri Valley edged Emporia 14-7. In today’s Big Eight, where the runnerup goes to the Orange Bowl provided Oklahoma wins the conference title, Colorado is a threepoint underdog against Nebraska. A Colorado victory, however, would virtually put the Buffaloes in the Orange Bowl. Baylor Is Underdog Southern California is a 14-point pick over Baylor and North Texas State is favored over Tulsa. Syracuse, Texas, U. S. C. and North Texas State are the only remaining unbeaten and untied major powers. Oklahoma is a seven-point choice over Army and Notre Dame is a three-point favorite over Navy in two of the day’s top intersectional clashes while Pennsylvania is favored over Columbia by 16 points and Dartmouth is eight points over Cornell in Ivy League features. Delaware, the Middle Atlantic Conference leader, faces Bowling Green, the mid-American leader, in one of the season’s top small college games. Delaware is ranked first and Bowling Green third in the UPI small college ratings. Each has a 7-0 record. Southern Methodist is rated six points over Arkansas, lowa is six over Ohio State, Duke seven over Wake Forest, Harvard 10 over Brown and Missouri 21 over Kansas State in other features.
